Go to wiesbaden downtown is a dream nice shopping places better then in frankfurt.
Go to Mainz and take a rhein -main cruise,or sjust go walk along the rhein main river downtown is nice there too.

There are Stuttgart (plus Black Forest which is only 30 mins away from Stuttgart to the southwest by car), Heidelberg, and Frankfurt.
If you have a little more time you MUST seeRothenburg ob der Tauber (Xmas markets all year round, old town with defence wall still existing, and many more things - about 1.5 hours by car from Stuttgart on the autobahn - highway - to the northeast).

Well, between Stuttgart and Frankfurt you will pass the Hohenzollern Schloss (castle) the last kaiser of Germany. However, castles have a problem -- they're located on top of mountains and your legs will get a workout. Heidelberg, Heppenheim are in the next state over from Baden-Wuertemburg -- the Pfalz which is totally rustic wine country along the Rhine. The way to see Germany is to get off the tours, the autobahns and cruise the small roads. Depends on what you want to do. Concerts, museums, cafes, trains. The Christ-child markets begin just after our Halloween. Do NOT wear a backpack with valuables to a crowded thing like that. You're pretty much safe anywhere you go in Germany outside of the major cities.

Christmas markets won't open before end of november or even december (4 weeks before christmas?). In october you won't find too many tourists; only in Heidelberg you might encounter a greater number of Americans and Japanese.

Travelling down the Neckar valley to Heidelberg you can find a lot of castles and nice towns, e.g. (just a selection):

Ludwigsburg (castle)
Lauffen am Neckar (old town)
Bad Wimpfen (sort of residence of former german Kaisers)
Burg Hornberg (castle of GÃ¶tz von Berlichingen)
Zwingenberg (castle)
Eberbach (town)
Neckarsteinach (town with 4 castles)
Dilsberg (medieval town on a mountain top)
HEIDELBERG

famous cathedrals (besides Cologne the most important medieval ones; my personal recommendations):
Speyer, Worms, Mainz

Relics of the Monastary of Lorsch

castles(baroque?)&cities a bit further south the Rhine River:
Rastatt, Karlsruhe, Bruchsal, monastary of Maulbronn, Schwetzingen (castle with nice park)

You have to visit my hometown Wertheim am Main. Wertheim is between Wuerzburg and Frankfurt. The town is located between 2 rivers and has a castle on top of the hill. There are hills everywhere.On the Web there are sev. websites. here is one of them.. wertheim.de

Nice. Germany is not too bad at this time of year. In Frankfurt, I would go shopping. It's really just a metropolitan with very little sites to see. There are nearby cities of Rudesheim and Bad Homburg. Rudesheim is about 1 hour away and definitely recommended. It lies on the Rhine and is a classic old town. You can even take a ferry there if you're feeling adventurous. Bad Homburg has an old school casino and it reminds me of those casinos in the James Bond movies (Casino Royale anyone).

I would definitely stop by Heidelberg. It has a pretty gorgeous castle and is like a college town. I've never been to Heppenheim.

Stuttgart is a nice place to visit. Other than being the home of Mercedes Benz, it also has another claim to fame. Supposedly, it has the second gaseous natural hot spring in the world (next to Budapest). It's like jumping into a pool of warm Perrier. Ask the locals about the hot springs.

I only have one sugestion but supossedly it's the place to go, Amsterdam, lots of history went down there.
