As to insurance: You don't need one except a healt insurance (just in case), and you should check with your local insurance provider(s) if they offer a limited travel health insurance. I'm German, and I always had one from my insurer for around 100 euros a year which insured me for up to 3 months abroad. These things usually are quite cheap and cover necessary medical treatment and hospital stays, but not the common flu or things like that; there are prescription-free drugs for that. -- And the good news is, in many months in foreign countries, mostly Asia, I didn't need the insurance even once.
So what are your other costs? You'll be staying with a friend, you say, so I think you would like to contribute to the household income. Nobody ever would let you pay for the rent, electrcity, water or even food; but if you sometimes pay the shopping bill (or go shopping for food) that will be appreciated. Be generous, count 400 euros in for that.
And all the rest depends. How often do you plan to go out, and where? French dinner or McD's? Do you plan to travel around (train tickets!) or mostly stay in one place (hiking and biking)? How many souveniers are you planning to buy? Do you smoke (cigarettes are expensive)? What about your mobile phone?
If someone would stay with me, I wouldn't charge him anything, but still recommend that he bring at least 1,500 euros for a month. You'll always spend more as a tourist than a local would do, an be it simply that you buy some useless, but fun stuff to bring home with you. If you'd stay longer, the amount of money you'd need would decrease every month; but I know from my own experience that first time you see a place there are so many "must-haves" you just can't resist.
So take this as a rough guideline. -- And while writing this, I asked myself: Why don't you simply ask your friend what he/she would guess you should bring?
And, btw, it's not very difficult nowadays to transfer money from Australia to Europe these days. If you have a friend down there with a Paypal account, and your friend has one in Germany, money can be in his bank account in less than 24 hrs. |

as per general expenses if you can cook pasta, with one euro you can eat 10 times. It's the same pasta you have in New Zealand you know :)
Going out? That's up to you, same as when in New Zealand you can go out and have a simple beer or you can go out and pay $750 for a meal in some 5 star restaurant, choice is yours.
You can get insurance here
http://www.simplyinsurancequotes.com/travelguard-insurance-quote.php they start at $25 and have offices all over the world. Well worth it.
As per flying, you buy your ticket in New Zealand so I am not sure how much... if I knew someone in New Zealand I'd ask them but I don't know anyone..perhaps you know someone there. |
