US Military and Green Card/German Citizenship?

Hi,
I was wondering, can I join the US Military with a Green Card and German Citizenship?
Also, if you go to college, do you automatically become an Officer.
Do Officers fight in the front lines?
One more - will I be able to retain my German citizenship IF I join the US Military?
Thanks.

Also, please do not berate me for not serving my birth country - I am planning on serving in the Bundeswehr for the mandatory 9 months.
Plus I lived in the US since I was one!

You can join. Talk to a recruiter. If you go to college and do Army ROTC then you become an officer. If you go to college and then go in the army you have to come in as a E-4 and go to Officer Candidate School.

As long as your green card is valid for the entire duration of your stay in the military, you may join. You won't have to give up your German citizenship, either.

I believe it's hard to say what you would be doing after enlisting.. I think they decide what your unit does after boot camp and AIT training.

Yes, having a college degree will allow you to enter as an officer. Or you could enter as an enlisted and then later on try to become a warrant officer so you'd have more time to work on your degree in the meantime.

However, and here lies the catch: you may only join the US military after getting permission to do so from the German Defense Ministry, or you will automatically lose your German citizenship! This shouldn't be an issue since you have lived in the US for almost all of your life. You can therefore actually also be exempt from mandatory service in the Bundeswehr.

Here's something you should have a look at " Wehrpflicht deutscher Staatsangehöriger im Ausland" : http://www.palma.diplo.de/Vertretung/palma/de/04/DD__Wehrpflicht,property=Daten.pdf

There is many people in the US Army, they don't have US Citizenship, they get it later. I think you can join the US Army too. See your local recruiter office for US Army. If you get US Citizenship, you can still keep your German Citizenship, there is now new rules for that. Talk about that with German Government Office.
