Visiting Germany- Frankfurt/Trier?

I am Irish and I love Germany. Im flying there next weeekend and fancy a good cultural, social and drinking experience! Should I proceed from Hahn airport straight to Trier or should I go to Frankfurt?

I cant go to both! Is Trier fun at the weekends? Will Karneval be on next Friday Saturday Sunday? Above all, would a visit to Trier be better than one to Frankfurt for a weekend trip? Any answers you can forward will be appreciated!

Vielen dank!

Frankfurt is a rather modern city with all advantages/disadvantages of such a town, Trier is pretty old (in fact its the oldest german town) and probably has a more relaxed attitude.I'd rather pick Trier, not much to see in Frankfurt unless you fancy office buildings.

Take Trier. Frankfurt is not much of a Carnival city. In Trier you also get a lot of history. Look into www.trier.de and you will get anidea!

Actually, you should get on a shuttle from Hahn and go directly to Cologne. The shuttle bus takes two hours and costs 15€, or 18€ if you buy a 24 hr return ticket. Karnival will be in full swing! It is quite wild! The whole scene is only five minute walk from the bus.

If it is a choice between Frankfurt and Trier, probably go to Frankfurt. Trier is smaller and is also fun, but not so exciting as the big cities. Also, Frankfurt has a whole part of the city dedicated to bars. There are like 140 of them crammed into one area.

Really, tho, I would say go to Cologne! You won't be sorry! There is no place in Germany so cool as Cologne (Köln) at this time of year. I guarantee it!

If I had the choice I would choose Trier, Frankfurt is too modern of a city as said and much more fun in Trier I bet.
