Visiting Germany for 5 days, where should I go?

I'm going to Germany after a week in Spain in late May. I'm in my early 30s. Most people tell me I should visit Berlin and Munich. I just want to soak in the German culture and get some great photos and use what little of the 8 years of German I remember. I was told to spend 3 days in Berlin and a 1.5 days in Munich, taking trains between places and a train back to Frankfurt to fly home to SF. Any recommendations?

JUPITER
My advice: to go Hamburg - it's in Northern Germany and Hamburg has much more to offer than Munich and tourists also don't get ripped off there as in Munich. Munich is EXTREMELY expensive and you'll really get poor when you're staying in Munich. And Hamburg also has lots of things to offer. Just visit the official website of Hamburg at http://www.hamburg.de (also in English) and see for yourself.

Greetings from Germany!!

5 days to do that much traveling is hard. I would want to pick one place and learn it well. You can always go back again. My favorite place in Germany is Munich.

But whatever you do, have fun!

go to Neuschwanstein, its pretty cool

Not much in the way of night life but if you want beautiful country you have to travel down the Rhine river, whether by boat or by train. The castles along the banks, and even in the middle of the river, are amazing. The castle Rheinfels was cool and the ancient little towns along the river are pretty neat. My wife and I stayed in Bacharach and had a great time. The people were really nice. Munich is cool too (Hofbrau Haus, Glockenspiel, Dachau conc. camp, etc) and the nearby castles of Mad King Ludwig (Neuschwanstein, Linderhof) were amazing. Enjoy. I'm jealous.

You should go to BERLIN, STUTTGART and to FRANKFURT.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you're after a bit of night life, then sure, why not check out Munich or Berlin or even Hamburg (though I'd focus on one, max. two), but if it's Germany you're wanting to experience, then I'd go for the quainter, less touristy places. The Mosel River with its castles and friendly people is one of my very favorites, plus you'd be near enough to Cologne should a big city urge hit you. Then there's the Palatine Forest. Though the city life is next to zero, the landscape is gorgeous and the food yummy, plus you could also get in a day in France (Strasbourg is great!). For the Palatine, I'd consider making Pirmasens my base (not a great city at all, but very convenient). And, of course, there's fantastic places like Rothenburg o.d. Tauber (enchanting, despite the tourists), Heidelberg, and Bavaria (the Zugspitz is nice!). Problem with most of my suggestions though might be transportation. You'd need to rent a car. But, hey, driving on the Autobahn is an experience of a life time!!!! I'd say I'm jealous... but since I live here, well, what's there to be jealous about? HeeHee =O> HAVE A GREAT TIME!!! Germany's great!!

All the people answer good things what to do in Germany. 5 days is not enough, but Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt are great cities. There is so much to see and to do. Have fun.

Well, I LOVE München. But, if you plan to use German from school, it might not be the best, because they have a dialect there. Actually, almost everywhere has a dialect... Bayern is just more famous for it. I would again say that you should not travel so much. 5 days in one place is quite little. München defianatley has a lot to offer though.
