Visiting Germany soon. How common are English speakers? Will they at least speak English in the hotels?

tons of people in germany speak english now, and my cousin learned greek and english by the time he was in 7th grade in school and he learned them in school not outside. have fun in germany! i love it there!!

J
II lived and traveled around Germany for 4 years. Hotel staff spoke english everywhere I stayed.

Cabhammer
Yes, most hotels will speak English. Most restaraunts will have English languages menus also. But you should try to use German when you can. You will be surprised at how much easier it is to get around.

ssmirk
no worries,

English is widely spoken in Germany... as everyone has taken English in High School.

most people know basic english but be patient and speak clearly and not to quick.

you will have no problems in hotels

Enjoy Germany

English speakers very common. Best to try and speak German, they will become frustrated at your attempt and usually reply in English. The Germans all take English in school.

rolandmcduk
Pretty much anyone under the age of 60 pretty much understands basic English, especially in the urban areas.

Claudia
Yes,the most Hotels speak English.I hope you have a nice time in my country,to witch place will you travel?

I'm currently stationed here in Germany and please be slow when speaking english, yes they will understand and I have had some that choose not to speak to you in english. I just ordered McDonalds today and she spoke good english but i went to fast and lost her at 2 cheeseburgers.

They are more common then you may think. I went over there visiting and found all the hotels I stayed at, they did speak english. Most people seemed to know english, if not basic english. So not to worry, you will be fine.

English-speakers abound in all areas of Germany, as it's mandatory to take several years of English in school there. To what degree they've used it and are proficient in English depends on the individual... and I've known more than a few who pretend not to know English to avoid having to talk to you. You shouldn't see that too often, though. I would in fact be surprised if you found a hotel where they didn't at least have a rudimentary understanding of English. I would highly recommending familiarizing yourself with at least a basic understanding of German, not only because it will help you understand how to find things and to ask for help, but because like in most countries, Germans do appreciate it when you at least try to speak in their language.
