I'm pretty sure you are overreacting. I spent time alone in Berlin (I'm easily kidnappable too), and had no problems. I stayed in a wombat hostel close to Alexanderplatz, it was very nice. I actually felt safer in Berlin, than I do in most US cities.

i would say that you were pretty safe as germany is quite multi cultural and if you are used to england then you will find its not much different to the u.k
but if i was you i would stay away from east germany but west germany is ok.

I have lived in Germany twice and have never, ever seen any act of racism or have heard anything of it. It's Europe - There are a lot of people from a lot of different places, tourists and members of the EU!

Berlin is a beautiful city, and there are no places that you will be or feel unsafe.

the thing is, if you stay in a hotel, peep the atmosphere and go with your instincts.

Berlin really isn't that bad of a city. I think your overreacting a little. Berlin crime rate has declined since 2003. A majority of the crime comes from non-German teenagers.

Check out the website in my source.

I live in Berlin and it is not that bad. Bad news makes good news. Berlin has the multicultural festival each year and there is a huge St. Christopher parade for gays in summer.

There are tons of Asians here - especially mail-order brides hanging on the arms of older men:) Don't worry about sticking out like a fly floating in a jug of cream - you could walk around here naked and no one would notice.

It is also nonsense about all East Germans being racists. I think it is worthwhile visiting the old east Germany. If you have time go to Dresden, The Harz mountains and Rügen Island.
