We're on orders to Ansbach, Germany! We have so many questions - thanks for any help anyone can give us.?

Does anyone have a good contact number for on-post housing? I haven't reached anyone at the number I have.

Is there a weekly farmer's market in town?

Are the Kasernes located close to town?

Is there a lot to do with small children and families? On post and on the economy?

I have more but I can't think of them right now. Thanks for your replies!

First off, the phone number is 09802-83-3415/3414. Hours are M-Th 0730-1600; F 1200-1600, Closed U.S. & German holidays. Thus you'll have to try again on Tuesday.

Yes, there is a weekly farmers market downtown on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There is also an additional market each third Saturday of the month held at a close-by location, which has only 14 vendors though.

Katterbach is about 2.5 miles away from Ansbach, roughly a 2 min car drive, since you'll just drive down the road. But if you'll want to do lots of exploring downtown, you'd be better off with a car, since the bus only stops there a couple of times a day.

There is plenty to do in the area, not so much on post though. On post, you'll have a movie theater and a bowling center. However, off post in and around Ansbach you'll have anything from a pool to the Playmobil Fun Park, malls, flea markets, sightseeing tours (castles, churches), etc.

Once you get here, you can get flyers of everything to do around here from ACS.

You won't reach anyone on phone until next Tuesday, 14th April 2009. We have Easter holidays here, and Ansbach is a mostly catholic town, so Easter is a time where everyone visit their family or go egg hunting, if they've got nothing better to do. Or answer your question...

I don't know about the barracks especially in Ansbach, but I can give you a general answer, which is very sincere, as I'm born German, live here, and I've known many G.I.s and their families:

It all depends on you. If you want to stay within the barracks, no problem, then do so. But if you want to live with the Germans, then go out and mix among the crowd. You are free to choose. And most people here speak some English, so they'll also help you find out where there's a farmers' market in town. Traditionally, it should be on Wednesdays; I'm not sure about the day in Ansbach, but I'm sure there is one.

Also visit the many artisans' markets (Kunsthandwerkermärkte) and flea markets in your area; I'm sure you'll find some nice little things to either carry home or send to your friends in the US and elsewhere.

There are farmer's markets on in every village and town just about. They usually are there on saturday mornings and once mid-week. There should be plenty of parks and playgrounds for kids.

Ansbach is a small town but the Kasernes are close to the housings. I used to live in Nuernberg and dated a guy from Ansbach. I remember their PX was pretty big. Sorry to say it's a little boring there but once learn how to drive (you probably need the German/American driving classes) you can drive out to bigger cities.

Check the web about Ansbach: www.garrison Ansbach or USAG Ansbach. There is also phone book, perhaps interesting for you.
Right now is Easter in Germany so many people are not working also the Military have Training Holiday too.
About the weekly markets you can find the information's in the military Newspaper "Stars & Stripes", we have another newspaper coming out every 2 weeks "Bavarian News" is very interesting too. Ansbach is not big so the Kaserne is not far a way from the little town. They do activities in the base with kids, also some activities in American Schools.
Better is you need to get out the town on the weekends and see some another bigger places, and also you can travel with MWR they are having nice trips for families round Europe.
Good Luck....
Army spouse from Bavaria...
