Don't rent a car. There are many hidden fees including 'winter tires' you have to pay for if in the cold season. The trick is to figure out exactly how many train trips you will make and if they will be long distance. If long disctance trips, then look into a German rail pass. It is like $200 for 5 trips. The bonus is, you don't have to reserve a ticket, just get on the train (even the fancy high speed trains) if you ever want for a seat, try the dining car. If you are only making local trips, try purchasing a regional pass. A regional pass is good for in 'state' travel. for 18 hours. You can travel all over Bavaria, for example, for about EUR 20 for a day (with 4 other people on one pass!) You can't use the high speed trains for that pass, though. I would avoid hostels. You can often find a cheap(er) place to stay in a budget hotel houtside of town. Use www.hrs.de which allows you to search by distance to city center. If you are willing to take a bus or commuter train into town in the morning, you can save a bunch of money on hotels (the most expensive part of travel in Germany) Check to see if breakfast is included. Buy most of your food at grocery stores or kiosks and you will save a lot of money as well. |

I'm from Germany. Best is: Rent a car or use the train, but that could be kind of expensive, since the db (german train company) is raising their prices. Germany isn't that big, you can travel from the very south to the very north in less than 16 hours! The gas prices are about 1,50 $ per liter!!!!!! But it's probably cheaper than pedr train. |
