What's the weather like in Germany around Frankfurt & South in March?

We are thinking of hiring a car and wonder if it is safe to drive, from Frankfurt down to Heildelberg then along the Romantic Road to Oberstaufen about 180 klms from Munich. We would also appreciate any information on use of snow tyres and chains if that is necessary at this time.

well, march can still be kinda cold. this winter's very mild though.
i don't think you will need any chains for that time of the year. even when having snow here, you will be safe with winter tires. make sure that they are on the car! some companies try to safe money and make you drive with summer tires. but: according to german law, when being caught without winter tires, YOU will have to pay the fine, because you are the driver. and it could even get worse: when having an accident, and there is a proof that there would not have been an accident with winter tires, the insurance will not pay anything! so it is really important that your rental car will have winter tires in march (they have to give them to you, even when they start to complain).
all the streets are being cleaned real fast, so you should be fine.
enjoy your trip!

In March will be cold here, but all the cars has winter tires, this is the rules in Germany. Autobahn is always clean from the snow, so don't worry so much and have fun.

I would guess the weather is pleasent. I've been to Heildelberg Germany 3 times last year but didnt happen to go in March; close but not exact. My bf, on the other hand, was there year round and from what i remember around that time the weather is pleasent. Cool enough for a fleece during the day and a light jacket at night. It also depends if the sky is clear or rainy too. I doubt it if you will need snow gear; but you might want to double check.

Since it's still winter in March you will have to expect snow, especially in Oberstaufen! When hiring a car, don't expect winter tires, but you can opt them at major rental companies. Even if it should snow, the highway from Frankfurt/Heidelberg/Ulm/Lindau(Oberstau... will be well maintained, except if it snow's like yesterday with 40 cm in one night!!!

Normally in March, you should not need snow tires anymore; however, the weather has been so weird in the last few years, it seems hard to tell. It should be in the 40's I'd say, rainy but sometimes also sunny!
Have fun!!!
