If u wanna live cheap, u made the right choice to prefer Eastern Germany. Due an economical problem we have a demographical problem in Germany, meaning, that most of the people who prefer a higher living standard meaning having a secure job, move to the West. This results in loaaaads of empty flats and houses. U can get a 100 m² flat in Leipzig for the same price u get a 8m² room in Munich...I fu wanna stay for some month u really can afford a flat..Beautiful historical cities in the East are Leipzig, Dresden, Magdeburg....

Fabian
I recommend Leipzig. You can get really cheap and very good flats and appartments here near the city centre or near a train-/tram-/busstop with direct connection to the city centre.

You can get all around Germany in just some hours from here. It has a good central position inside Germany and pretty good train / airplane connections.

It's a beautiful city and we are welcoming every body.

If you don't want Leipzig, maybe Dresden would be a good choice, but it isn't in such a central position as Leipzig is.

If you look at the bigger cities: Berlin is definitely the cheapest in renting prices. Food is pretty much the same anywhere. I think Munich ist still a little more expensive on food. And I think they have the highest renting prices in Germany.

And in general: East is cheaper than west.

There are some general tendencies that may sound familiar to you already: big cities are more pricey than smaller towns, the East is cheaper than the West, and the South can be a bit more expensive, too. If you want to live in an actual city, let me warn you that Hamburg, Munich, Düsseldorf and Cologne are quite expensive. Berlin is still ok, and so are many cities in the Ruhr area - Dortmund, Bochum, Essen, even Oberhausen and Duisburg. They all hve some pretty and affordable areas.

If you are looking for a smaller town to live in, the rules are not that easy. I'd recommend you go to immobileinscout24.de and check out some offers there (you can just enter the name of a place or the postcode).
