What Makes Germany So Popular? |
A recent BBC survey shows that Germany is, once again, the most popular country in the world.
What do you think makes Germany so popular? We all know about their past, so I think it's even more fascinating that the once so unloved country is now viewed so positively.
I'm originally from Ohio, but moved to Germany in 1992. I love this place!
Article about the survey: http://www.young-germany.de/news-verwaltung/news-singleview/article/f46419ca83/bbc-survey-shows-germany-to-be-most-popular-country-in-the-world.html?no_cache=1 Additional Details @ boy
I don't see how the population has anything to do with popularity. Please elaborate. |

i am not living in Germany nor anywhere near the country, but i have always loved Germany even before when i went there for the first time there in 2007... the ppl are so detailed-oriented + meticulous in the things or conversation that they are in, and usually from what i've noticed the children are mostly well-behaved...
Germany used to have contributed the 3rd highest GDP in the world (now surpassed by China)... Germany has its own unique culture and are mostly pioneer in the engineering + automotive field - in top20 best car makers in Forbes list in 2007 (if i wasn't mistaken), 5 of those were car makers from Germany - VW, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche + Audi. Arup, is a well-known firm for engineering architectural and engineering marvels around the globe... Given that this European country was badly destroyed in WWII, it's a miraculous comeback they have made with such respect and progress...
i have written a couple of essays on this country and one entitled "My Obsessions on Germany". it is to a certain extend that i began to cheer for Germany in the World Cup and Olympics + took German language as a third language subject...i would definitely without a doubt, like to come back for a historical visit to Germany! so it's a no wonder Germany is so popular, a common but true to heart: ich liebe Deutschland... |

Us. Despite the BBC and the Hitlery, sorry: History Channel I think we young Germans (and at the beginning of my 40's, I think I'm still young) have contributed a lot to Germany's image in the world, not excusing for what our ancestors did, but accepting it and say "look here: that was then, this is what we are now". Sure, our politicians made many mistakes on the way, still do, and so do the people. I can't really say if my opinions were always right, and I can't really say where my choice in this year's federal elections will lead the country to. But I can say, and that's what I'm proud of (and many Germans are), that we have a living democracy where every opinion can be heard. Many of the younger people take that for granted, but it isn't. Democracy isnt child's play. It has to be won over and over again, and if necessary, over the government. That's what Germany and the Germans have understood from history. And we have a culture of debate: Where other people step back and hide their opinion behind friendly questions or "white lies", we simply speak out what we mean. A no is a no, and a yes is a yes. Nothing in between. Maybe that's another thing that makes us so popular: Reliability. If we say it, we mean it.
Let me give you an example to maybe better understand it: The Super Bowl Incident. NO, really NO cable company in Germany would even have thought a second about "compensating" customers for a 30-second "porn glitch". They would have said, well, the ordinary snafu, sh** happens on digital lines sometimes, if you feel insulted, use your remote to switch it off. -- That's how Germans would have handled such a situation: Straightforward, and with no lame excuses. |

People from all over the world have some connection to Germany. I moved to the US and literally EVERYBODY has a story about Germany - how they have traveled there, how they have ancestors or friends who are from Germany....
During the wars, Germans moved all over the world and nowadays their children have probably never seen the place, but they always heard grandma's stories - of course they feel drawn towards their "home". |

Well John, it´s the first time in our history we are surrounded only by friends, and living with alot of friends is somewhat easier then beeing surrounded by enemies. |

Because of our horror history ( 39-45) the younger generation has learned the lesson ( most of them, sorry not all), we all grow up with the idea we are not alone, just a part of the world and for this we learned English and other language to communicate.
For me as a German I will need years traveling around in my country to catch all the beauty by landscapes, the different cultures, the different cooking, different languages ( all German but so influenced by other tribes and culture)
Germany in the northern middle of the continent was important to most countries in ancient times, a pool of trade, power, culture and science. And where most Americans coming from? : by their own will from Europe or without will from the African continent.
So looking back to the ancient culture beginning by cooking and listening to Bach and Beethoven or Kraftwerk = Germany is not bad at all.
Why are so many German Butcheries and bakeries in US so successful, back to the roots of basic quality!
Our Language is not so different to English but else well close to Latin and we are still using jiddish words, because they are a part of us.
Germany is a small country but offers nearly all colors of history and culture, simply lovely!
All my American guests loved my German cooking, they said it is tasteful and pure, far away from Fast Food, thanks to my mom, Grand mom and Grand grand mom. |

I dont think that germany would have been the most popular country, if other countries like sweden, norway, netherlands, denmark, ... would have participated in this survey.
Good reasons why Germany is popular were mentioned by Alvin e.g. |
