1. The Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin's only remaining city gate, is the true symbol of the city. Because it was situated in the no man's land just behind the »wall, it also became symbolic of the division of the city. After the Fall of the Wall, the Gate was reopened on December 22, 1989.
2. The Reichstag
The Reichstag is the seat of the German Bundestag or federal government and, with its new dome, one of the Berlin's biggest crowd-draws. Its colorful past reflects the turbulence of German history since the 19th century.
3. Zoologischer Garten and Knut
The zoological garden, one of the largest in the world, is among the most important sights in the city. One of the Germany's first zoos, it was opened in 1844 on the initiative of Alexander von Humboldt and the Africa researcher Lichtenstein, who served as the first director of the zoo.
Berliners get very emotional about the wellbeing of the animals: the condition of cute Knut, the polar bear, is often discussed.
You can check this website there are mentioned many other things too...it's difficult to find only 3 famous things! |

Berlin has been the old capital of Prussia, then of Germany, and is the capital of the reunited Germany.
Berlin is also known for its many museums (e.g. housing the bust of Nofretete-Nefertiti of Egypt from about 1370 BC, and a city gate from Mesopotamia, and other ancient art works), famous architectural buildings (like the Brandenburger Tor - Gate) surprising, decorated bars, the opera house, theaters and the Kuhdamm (cow dam), the famous shopping street.
Berlin people are known for their sense of humor and being quick to give a witty answer.
Berlin is famous for the visit of President Kennedy, who said in Berlin that all free citizens are Berliners and thus, "Ich bin ein Berliner." (I am a Berliner.) The funny thing is that what he really said is "I am a Berliner pancake," probably because he had an American and not a German translator. In German, to say "I am a citizen of Berlin" is, "Ich bin Berliner." (I am Berliner.) Ein Berliner (a Berliner) is a delicious yeast ball with plum marmalade in it, fried in oil and rolled in sugar! However, the Germans knew what the President wanted to say and were enthusiastic about his courageous speech! He greatly helped to prevent that the Soviet Union would capture West Berlin or cut it off its supplies from the free West!
Berlin may be most famous for its wall that separated East Berlin from West Berlin, and made West Berlin a free island within East Germany. The wall was high and hardly anyone could escape alive trying to climb it from East Berlin to get to the free West Berlin. The wall separated families and friends across the city! Gorbachev ordered the wall to be taken down, after President Reagan had said to Gorbachev........
"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall!"
You may be able to acquire a rare small piece of the Berlin wall (rubble) from biochakra.com, if you make the highest offer. A few authentic pieces are still available.
The atmosphere in Berlin is light and humorous. Germans say it is the Berlin air causing an uplifting spirit. Canned Berlin air may be bought and taken home (that's one of the humorous expressions of Berlin)!
If you visit Berlin, you may not want to miss to see nearby Sanssouci, the favorite castle of King Friederich the Great, built in 1745-1747.
