They are now known as Cupcakes in German, although an older person might need the translation you give! I checked out some websites out of interest and I also found "Bastardneffen der Muffins, auch Fairy Cake genannt". Lol!!

Couple of websites below to show that it IS known in Germany/Austria, some parts only maybe ...

Kekse are biscuits, not cakes.

Here in Germany there is no difference between a muffin or a cup cake. So, all cakes baked in a paper case are called muffins. Whether it is a traditional American muffin, or a traditional English muffin, or a fairy cake, use any batter you like, bake it in a paper case and call it a MUFFIN.

Otto B is right, they are called Muffins in Germany. They don't have cupcakes here like they do in the States, for example, with frosting or icing. Something like that could also possibly be called a "Küchlein", or little cake.

I´m German and never heard "cupcakes" before. We don´t say that like this. I would say in Germen "Keckse" or "Kecksle".

Cupcakes in german are the same as cupcakes anywrere else...the onyl difference is when someone with mustache takes a bite, they raise the their right hand and praise hitler.
