Germany consists of 16 states, much like the U.S. they have their own government as well as a federal government.

Like others said, check Wikipedia. There are 16 states, 3 of them are "city states" (basically just covering the ground their capital is on) (Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen, by the way). But the rest you gotta have to find out yourself! ;)) |

But let´s start on the bottom:
Gemeinde (may consists of one town or of different villages or small towns with a mayor as head of the administration)
Kreis (maybe county in the US) with an administration for an area consisting normally of different Gemeinden. There are also the "kreisfreie Staedte". Those are large cities, which don´t belong to any Kreis. Towngovernment has also the rights of the Kreis.
Some of the states (the larger ones) of Germany have Regierungsbezirke as next step in the hierarchy of administration.
Then the states and then the Federal Republic of Germany.
Try also your local library and the Enciclopedia Britannica. In Wikipedia might be too many mistakes. |
