Oil and gas, but that's just like in the U.S. We have a lot of coal instead, that's why they want to build new power plants fired on coal, to give us greater independence from Russian gas and oil supplies. I wouldn't say that there are any scarce resources; on a low level, Germany could be self-sustained. We have very fertile soils, and even a uranium source (at Wismar, in the former GDR) that could be used to keep nuclear power plants running. Maybe we would have to live without bananas, but oranges and other fruit grow in the Rhineland and near the Bodensee just as they do in Italy. Prices, of course, would go through the roof, but we wouldn't starve. We never did. |

You have to realize that there are a lot of people living in a relatively small area. There are only a few farms left in Germany. This makes commodities such as beef, milk, pork, etc. somewhat scarce, but by no means rare. Petrol (in 1993) was going for what we pay for a gallon, they pay for a litre. Meaning that it costs roughly 3.81 times as much. Most people live in flats. Actual houses are usually owned by families and passed down through generations. Those that are on the market will be quite expensive. |
