What are some cool places to see in Germany and what are some things to do?

Germany is a beautiful country with lots to see! If you have a couple weeks you can see all the places mentioned below. Otherwise if you have only a short time in a specific region then use the regional references.

North East
Berlin: lots to see, 2 days needed easily
Potsdam: short train ride from Berlin, worth a 1/2 day
Dresden/Leipzig: worth 2 days

North
Hamburg: lots to see 2 days needed

North West
Cologne/DÃ¼sseldorf: minimum 2 days needed

South
Munich, 2 days needed
Fuessen with NeueSchwanstein Castle
Rothenburg
Heidelberg
Freiburg (Black Forest)
Mainau Island (especially during the spring)

Top three: Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bechtesgaden or Garmisch-Partenkirschen, and Heidelberg. Mosel valley too.

I've lived here for 9 years and have seen a lot. It kind of depends on your interests. Berlin has a lot of WWII/Hitler and Communist East Germany history. Outside the main train station you can find ads for tours in English. It's also a very big city with all the things you'd find in any big city. If you're interested in the outdoors and mountains, I'd suggest the area closest to Innsbruck, Austria. You can visit two countries at once, seeing the alps and places like the "Cinderella castle" (Neuschwanstein) and other nearby castles, as well as the general beauty of Bavaria. Close to where I live is Trier (they call themselves the oldest city in Germany) with many signs of old Roman ruins. Not to far, as well, is the beautiful city of Heidelburg. I'm leaving out a lot but it all depends on what you want to see and experience. If you know the area, I'd HIGHLY recommend going to tripadvisor dt cm.

1. The coolest place is the Zugspitze in the Alps.
2. If you are looking for parties, go to Berlin, Muenchen, Hamburg or any big University city.
3. Old Stuff anything Roman, to Vikings, to Iron age, lots of Museums and ruins, look it up. Try castle country, the Rhine Valley from Mainz to Koblenz, more castles, then you can count.
Its really hard to tell, since everybody has different ideas, what entertainment is. The biggest Cathedral in the world in Koeln, one of the most expensive Shopping streets in Duessledorf, or the glider plane museum near Frankfurt (Roehn), where the WW2 fighter pilots trained. Germany has really more to offer then Sauerkraut.

colonia is really nice, and has a good nightlife, but also aachen, which is a small town ,near to colonia is very nice, it is at the point of three borders , between holland, belgium and germany, and is the town of charles the great. if you do already visit this area, don't miss maastricht (in the netherlands) neither.

DÃ¼sseldorf and KÃ¶ln!!! Best areas in Germany...Old architecture, and north american services. If you don't speak German, it's pretty easy to get around in English (although I don't know for sure as I've never spoken English there).

Dusseldorf has something similar to the Champs-ElysÃ©es in Paris/ Magnificent Mile in Chicago...it's worth seeing because it has neither the jacked up prices nor the touristy feel. There is also a beautiful riverfront with tons of restaurants.

KÃ¶ln has the "Dom" which is one of the biggest churches in Germany. They started building it back in 900 A.D. There are tons of cafÃ©s and beautiful parks...The riverfront isn't as nice as in Dusseldorf.

So Nord-Rhein Westfalen is the best region...You can fly direct from North America, and there are so many cities within only a few minutes drive (i.e. Dusseldorf and KÃ¶ln are only 30 minutes apart, but entirely different worlds)>

Lived in Germany for 5 years..A great place to go is Rothenburg.. They are allways having the coolest festivals! A great time to go is right before christmas when they have the christmas market set up and there are many activities!
The town is surrounded my walls.. very cute town..Must visit!

There is one place that is overlooked. Take the a boat down the Mosel valley to Trier and stay there for a day. You have ruins/places to see from th eRoman times all the yway through modern times. It is in the far west of Germany near Luxenburg but definately worth seeing.
However Cologne, Munich, Garmish/Alpine Sclosses and Berlin and Hamburg are the biggest ones. To see all of the cool places..I lived there for eight years and didnt come close to see it all...

That depends entirely on what you're interested in-- there really is almost something for everybody. City life? Berlin & Munich are musts. WWII history? All over the place. Into wine? The Mosel valley is your thing. Medieval castles? Hit the Rhine. Car nut? Hit the Mercedes-Benz museum and arrange in advance a factory tour at Porsche, both in Stuttgart. Want big mountains and neat little towns? Try the areas around Fuessen, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Berchtesgarden.

The options are endless, really... Bavaria & SW Germany gets most of the attention, but there is neat stuff all over the place--it just depends what you're looking for. I would offer this, tho-- don't try to see the entire country in one trip, unless you're planning on staying for a year. :o) Pick one or two regions/areas you'd like to visit most, and concentrate on that--you'll have a much nicer trip. Yes, you can cover seven cities in 8 days, but does it really count if you see everything through a bus window???

I THINK IT HAS TO BE MICHAEL SCHUMACHERS GO-KART CENTER IN SINDORF HAS IT HAS A MUSEUM AND A GIFT SHOP, AND AMERICAN BAR TO BUY ANY KIND OF DRINKS AND A LOVELY RESTRAUNTE THE CIRCUIT INSIDE IS HUGE WITH LOVELY POSTERS OF MICHAEL AND OUTSIDE ALSO A LOVELY TRACK OUTSIDE TO, YOU CAN BUY HIS GO-KARTS FOR 1-2,000 EUROS
