Merkel's plan for Health care costs to increase was a issue, but it has been over shadowed with the financial crisis. You may take the financial crisis apart and break it into sub groups.

i.e

The financial crisis have diverse and huge issues and new ones with each day.

The falling stock market

Impact on Banking

Impact on Retirement

More to add to your ideas

Minimum wage (Germany has none)

Low wages (there is the high wages side to this discussion as well. The wages are mainly battle over all the costs that are added on to wages.)

Influx of foreigners

Unemployment in the New Germany

Gas Prices

Black (Under the table) workers

Never ending discussion over social costs whether it be the high wages, health care, unemployed . . .

You should read German news to check out the current issues. Check out the English language paper: http://www.dw-world.de/

The current issues:

Banking crisis
Job losses at Opel and other companies
The coalition between the two biggest parties (similar to the dems and reps in US), breaking down.
Cultural Integration of immigrating foreigners

- Bank crisis (of course)
- Economic downturn
- Change of the welfare state / unemployment (Do a search for "Hartz IV")
- privacy laws / data protection (big demonstration this afternoon in Berlin; it's 8:30 pm here, don't have a news overview yet -- no, I wasn't there)
- gas prices (as everywhere), and in general: cost of energy, oil and natural gas supply
- the US elections (especially the candidates' points of view on foreign policy / war)
- all sorts of environmental issues, from genetically modified crops to climate change

This is just a random list of current "hot topics" in the news; I won't rank them. My personal issues would be
1. social welfare / pension guarantees (which has to do with the aging population / low birth rate, as your sister already worked out)
2. dependancy on foreign oil and gas resources (which has to do with how we develop alternative sources)
3. the right balance between necessary surveillance and civil rights, and which federal government we should elect next year

These three are my personal most important issues, and my next year's vote will be determined by how each of our political parties perform on these topics, or what they propose to do about them after the election. It's nothing official, and please don't take it for that.

Sorry, really problems we don`t have in Western Germany and even the east is starting to grow. Ok, economy will decrease a little bit next year like anywhere else in the world but at the end of the year it will rise again. Real problems we don´t have in Germany. Living here is not the heaven, but it is also not the hell.

The most important question in Germany is in the moment "should smoking be allowed in small pubs or not" That is the threat in political stability in Germany. This question ended a fourty year lasting government in Bavaria.

Maybe that they are building the Center Against Expulsions. It will showcase the plight of Germans who were displaced shortly before the end or after the II WW. If they put the whole thing out of context, they will be able to portray themselves as victims of the war on par with Jews, Poles, Russians, Ukrainians, etc.
