What are some must see places in Germany/Europe? |
We are stationed in Germany and my parents are coming in May for two weeks. What are some of the best places to take them? They want to see some more traditional villages in Germany. We live near Spangdahlem and my husband can't take leave then so where ever we go needs to be with in 5 hours of Spang.. We are not big city people, so places that have beautiful scenery in the country, Castles, Catherdrals etc. would be more our speed. ;o) Of course where we live is just unbelievably beautiful but we would like to see something new too. I would really appreciate any ideas or suggestions you have. Thanks Additional Details New as in not something close to us that we see everyday. There are so many places that we could go and things to see but they will only be here for two weeks. So I was just wanting some ideas. If I wanted to just run out and ask people on the street I wouldn't have asked the question on here. |

- Heidelberg has a nice castle
- The walled city of Rothenburg is really pretty as well - they have preserved the medieval feel (however it is a long from you)
- We liked the town of Rudesheim on Rhine as well - a little touristy, but it felt very German to us with the cobblestone streets, small shop / restaurants, Neiderwald monument, and the wine-yard of Kloster Eberbach (which is ~25km North of Rudesheim)
- Luxembourg is pretty close to you as well and is a neat little city / country |

If I suggest any new idea (as I live in Germany), a thousand people will jump the bandwagon and join in. So I'd suggest you yourself go off base and ask the locals about the least frequented and yet interesting places, and maybe you'd direct your relatives to a completely other city and go there too, yourself. EVERY major city in Europe is within 5 hours flight time from Germany. Even Moscow.

So what kind of answer do you expect from people round here? I'm a German native with some travel experience, and many people round here may be Europeans and Americans with some travel experience, too, and I bet (sure thing) they'll also recommend to just go out and try. If you want a recipe for a cake, buy a cookbook; but there's no guarantee you'll succeed. But if you never fail, you don't learn how to cook. |
