What are some of the best things to do and see in Munich?

I will be in Munich and want to do more than just the average tourist traps. Where should I go, and what should I do?

Munich is actually a place not so much associated with tourist traps. The one main touristy place is the Hofbrauhaus (central brewing hall) but it really is worth the visit for the excellent beer and inexpensive, yet high-quality, food.

Two great things that people often miss are the English gardens and the Dachau concentration camp. The English gardens are immense, very beautiful, and with varying levels of activity. You can hang out in crowded areas, find a secluded spot, swim in the fast-flowing stream, sunbathe on the grass, or go to one of the beer gardens in the park itself.

The Dachau concentration camp, although well-known, is often overlooked by many visitors because they think that it will be too depressing. Although it is a somber place to visit, it is one of the places that really lets you get in touch with history as it actually was. Not just the fairy-tale versions of history that you get sometimes, but in this case the actual raw truth. Although not depressing, it certainly is a thought-provoking place with a valuable message.

Take a stroll near Karlsplatz in the evening. A large number of locals are out walking around, and going to the restaurants and bars. It is often difficult to distinguish the tourists from the locals here.

The more touristy things to do are see the glockenspiel (which is free and worth the fifteen minutes), and make a day-trip out to Fuessen to see crazy Ludwig's castles like Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Neuschwanstein was the model for Cinderella's castle in Disneyland. Yes, this is an extremely touristy thing to do, but worth the trip.

As dito above, but also if you go to the Hofbrauhaus across the street you'll find the Augustiner Pub, also known for having the best bavarian beer!

Hi,

Steven already gave you some good answers, though I disagree with the Hofbräuhaus. You wouldn't see any local person caught dead in there... it's tourisity, overpriced and unfriendly.

But now to the things you can do:

- if you are interested in art, the threa "Pinakotheken" (museums) are a must
- as ist the Deutsches Museum for technical stuff
- don't miss to visit at least 2-3 different beer gardens, this is how Bavarians spend their free time
- Walk along the Isar and enjoy the fresh air
- visit the usual sites like Marienplatz, Königsplatz, Stachus, etc.
- stroll around the city center and enjoy the atmosphere and the old buildings
