Kaffee und Kuchen in the middle of the afternoon.

Wurst - sausages. It seems every town in Germany has it's own version of this - they are all different, and they are all good! This ranges from Thuringer and Nurnburger Bratwurst to Blutwurst, Bochwurst, and even Berliner Currywurst.

Spaetzle and Kaesespaetzle - discussed before. Kaesespaetzle is particularly good, and a great option for a vegetarian - it has some onions on it - generally fried crisp, and is made with good cheese.

Schnitzel in all it's various forms, with various sauces.

Potatoes - in all sorts of forms, but potato pancakes, Kartoffelpuffer is wonderful. Auflauf - a kind of casserole with cream and potatoes is another thing. Try a Kartoffel restaurant if you see one.

Cabbage - saurkraut, but also red cabbage, Kohlrouladen (Cabbage rolls stuffed with meat). Also various salads may have cabbage in them.

In Berlin Eisbein - a knuckle of pork boiled and served on the bone is a treat.

Broetchen or Semmel - wonderful rolls with a hard outside and a soft inside - are an important part of a German Breakfast - with cheeses, jams and meats.

Quark - a dairy product somewhere between Sour Cream and Cream Cheese in flavor - not sour, not as sweet, and often served at breakfast.

Bretzeln - Pretzels, soft and large and fresh, especially in Bavaria.

Germany, although small in area, is densely populated and has so many different regions, so there will never be a final answer to questions like that. The best recommendation I can give (as a native German, currently living in Germany) is that you trust the local people's advice. There simply is no such thing as an "authentic" German dish. Of course, in Bavaria you'd sure try Schweinebraten mit KnÃ¶deln (pork with dumplings), but: Bavaria is not Germany. Almost every region has their own specialty to try, and, if you have weight problems, you should think about a week of fasting before coming to Germany. Because what German hosts usually do is to serve their guests rich and tasty dishes one person alone almost can't swallow. I'm saying this as a native German living in this country again, so you can be sure I know what I'm talking about.

i love german food but every type of food is great in germany
and german restaurants give u a prety big plate that they fill for you yet everything is made in german style

you shouldn't miss the traditional currywurst with french fries and mayonese, kasekuchen or plaufkuchen and the berliner dounots with coffee, it's absolutely awesome

don't forget to try the german beer which is definetly the best bear in the world, my favorite was berliner dunkle bock - black beer 7% alchool but the taste is ... the best i have ever tasted

in berlin i used to eat turkish food also - donner kebab of turkishe pizza awesome

i gained like 7 kilos in 2 months of living there :) great exeperience, germans rule !!!

I would suggest ROTE GRUETZE "pudding" - wonderful. German noodles of all sorts ...and of course the hamburger

Bratwurst - sausages usually grilled till almost crispy
Schnitzel - battered, fried pork that comes with a variety of toppings, each type with it's own name (Wienerschnitzel = plain, Rahmschnitzel = with cream sauce...)
Spaetzle = potato noodles served with butter, cream sauce, or mushroom sauce
All the different types of cake (kuchen)

You have got to try the Eisbein boiled pigs leg-I prefer it as Swhinehocksen (SP?)which is the pigs leg on a spit-UNBELIEVABLE.

Believe me -any authentic German food is great-even the sauerkraut
I visit Germany every 2 years from the states-I love it there-people are great too. If you don't understand the German language-just ask a younger person-they can typically speak some English

There is SO MUCH wonderful food.
I totally agree about the Schweinsbraten with Semmelknoedeln!!
In the Munich area, I LOVE a hot freshly smoked fish, the wieners with natural casing or Weisswurst (with sweet Bavarian mustard) and rye bread. One of my favourite things is a sandwich - hot leberkase on a semmel (sort of like a hot baked bologna on a crusty bun) - YUM!! And everything MUST be washed down with some wonderful beer - I'm partial to an ice-cold Bitburger.

I am a German, and its funny to see what Americans prefer to eat in Germany. All answers are right, but very touristy. Most young German like McDonalds, Burger King, Subways. They go to Pizza Hut and to Turkish fast food stations to eat Doener. I have never eaten Eisbein in my life. It is too fat. Sauerkraut in mostly eaten one time a year on December 31th. I have never seen so much people who sell Pretzels like in New York. But it is true, every region has its own specialities. When I visited USA I missed German bread and cakes. Also our chocolate is better. Visit a supermarket (Real or toom) and you will see, that there are much more various food to buy, than in American markets. But I miss two things here: Lifesafers and M&M's peanutbutter.

My personal favorite is Wiener Schnitzel mit pommes (It is not exactly a gourmet meal but they do serve it in almost every Bavarian Restaurant.

Also spetzle.

All of the suggestions are great-but the best thing is the drinking age for beer is 16 so try Franziskaner Weissen-to me, it tastes like honey!

I lived there for three years, let me see, how about EVERYTHING! Do you know sour kraut is a condiment over there? But if you want ketchup you have to pay for it? Try some Gluwein, if you like American beer or chocolate do NOT try German beer or chocolate, because you will never like what you get here in America again.

Well, I liked the Rump steaks, with butter.

The schnitzels are good too, but the brown sauce can "affect"
some people in a "loose" way.
I personally didn't like the bratwurst. The Germans love to
grind the meat ultra fine to the point it was like bologna to me.

I loved the rollbraten. But I warn you to stay form the haxen .
Basically a pig leg sliced up, fat and all.

If you like pork, Germany is for you. Pork is king there.

Hope you like French fries, because that seems to be a vegetable there.

DON'T GET AMERICAN FOOD!!!!

It is Germany. Not the US.

Everything except fast food will not be what your used to.

Including the Ketchup.

If your near Baumholder, try the Haus Gerlach in Konken.

I loved that place.

Hmmmm, all what was suggested before is very delicious, don't forget Frikadellen(meatloaf) and Heringsstip (sour herings in a sour creme) with boiled potatoes and if you are around Frankfurt Handkaes mit Musik (yellow soft sourmilk cheese topped with onion, vinegar and oil)
also around Frankfurt you find Ochsenbrust(boiled beef) with gruener Sauce
