Since Auschwitz is located in Poland, I suggest you visit Heidelberg, which feels like walking in another century. Simply fantastic. In general, the cities in that area are very picturesque, like Freiburg or Tubingen. Berlin is a must and Hamburg has a special charm.

Alps Garmisch,Frankfurt Sachs en Hausen its a few blocks were no cars are permitted & it has Bar after bar from Irish Pubs to salsa to jazz country western eneything you can think of there is a Bar for it if your in to night life, Rhein River cruise is cool there are Castles all along the River something you dont see every day just going threw little towns is cool.Wiesbaden has some cool scenery its wine country depends on how much time you have I have been here 13 years & still havent seen it all.

I was born in Germany and lived there 17 years so actually I think the best places to visit as a "foreigner" are:

-Berlin (never been there but a lot of people( eg my parents, friends) told me that it's a very beautiful city and it never falls asleep)
-Hamburg (one of my favourite cities, nice shopping places, harbours, churches etc., very cool nightlife ;)
-Cologne ( not as clean as hamburg but still a nice place eg. the Koelner Dom is a masterpiece)
- Nuremberg (actually i didn't like that place too much "middelages stuff" but for Americans/Canadians the perfect place to learn about german history)
- The Frisian Islands (soo relaxing ;) nice landscape)
- Bremen ( nice, cosy city in the north of Germany)
- Frankfurt (interesting history, nice landscape)

If you like big cities, try Hamburg and Berlin. Both are very international, artistic, a lot of cafés, night clubs, shops, galleries, etc. Hamburg has the biggest port of Germany, always worth a visit, and also a lot of parks, lakes, etc.
The famous St Pauli district, former red-light district, is full of theatres, night clubs and good restaurants. This is where the Beatles started in the 60's.
Berlin is still in a lot of ways the creative capital of Germany. A lot of artists and musicians live and work there.
Basically, the north-south and east-west differences in Germany are very important. Every part has its particularities. Being from the North, obviously I will recommend Hamburg, but a Bavarian will tell you to go to Munich and the mountains.
I hope that you will have more than 2 days, and thus be able to travel a bit around. It's worth it!

If you're a leftist, you'll love Berlin. Many things to see and people to talk with.
