the Dom ( a catheadral ) is amazing, have fun in the Altstadt ( an area with many pubs ) not far from the Dom. Try this link to find out more

Hi I am from the region around cologne. A must is the Kölner Dom (Cathedral from cologne) its not hard to find, cuz after u step out of the main train stration the Dom will welcome you. You should also take a cruise on the Rhine, as you can see many castles. A nice experience would also be the "dunkel restaurant" its a complete dark restaurant, its a nice experience for all your senses. And if you like beer then try Kölsch, its typical for cologne and my boyfriends favorite (hes from MN)

I'd start with the Dom--the big Gothic cathedral that dominates the skyline and is Koln's most recognizable landmark. There is a Fussgangerzone (pedestrian-only area) that starts from the Domplatz and heads south, with plenty of stores. Like any other large German city, there are plenty of stores, restaurants, historical sites, museums, churches/cathedrals, and nightlife. If you have the time, I might suggest taking a KD river boat (Koln-Dusseldorfer) down the Rhein river to towns like Koblenz, Boppard, St. Goar, Bacharach, Assmanshausen, Bingen, Wiesbaden, and Mainz.

The Germany Travel Guide at:
http://www.live-like-a-german.com/Travel_Guide/Travel_Guide.html

has a good article about doing a trip to Cologne.

The articles provides background about Cologne, and an overview of what to do.

Definetely visiting the Cologne Cathedral (Dom) is a must. In addition there are various museums and hundreds of galleries.

The article should get you started and has additional pointers that are useful for exploring Cologne.
