In Frankfurt the 'Main' things to see are the Zeil(center of Frankfurt and shopping area), the Romer Plaza where the city hall is, the Main River Area with many museums(film, art, history), several Jewish museums, Opera House and plaza. Great theater(some shows in English), the zoo is always fun.
Frankfurt is a great city to walk around and you will find many tourists there. English is widely spoken.
I have walked the streets of Frankfurt at all hours(I am a night owl) and compared to some American Cities I never had the sense that I had to 'watch' over my shoulder. Drug dealers? Yes, I have seen them(I think?), but you have to be looking for them if you really need them.....
Now, I am sure there are a few streets that are not safe, but then again is your idea of a thrill to go looking for that? I can give the club names where you can get into all kinds of trouble if you are really interested.
Anyway, I have lived in the Frankfurt area for over 19 years and I think the city of Frankfurt is safe.
Frankfurt gets a bad reputation from many Germans because of the high amount of non-Germans living there. There may be a few bad apples in the bunch, but over all it is an interesting mix.
For a visit, or to live there - Frankfurt is a great and safe city. |

I lived in FFT for about 18 months. Not my favorite city in Germany. It is mostly about business and banking these days. Not really the best place for tourism. It was pretty much destroyed after the war and there are very few old and beautiful buildings left. Some of the main attractions are the new high-rises.
You do want to see the Old Opera House and that neighborhood. Still some old/restored buildings and great shopping/dining. Other attractions are the Palmengarten and the Paulskirche.
No problem though during the day.
I never felt safe in FFT at night. There is a lot of drug dealing going on in the center, and there are gang wars between the Turks and the Arabs. Can be pretty scary. A single woman should not walk alone in the center at night, or around the train station. No problen during the day though, when the city is taken over by bankers. |

If you are taking a trip to Germany and you've never been there before, I'd recommend skipping Frankfurt and going to Munich, Hamburg, Berlin or Köln. |

I would not recommend doing anything in Franfurt. I would suggest travelling the Koln-Bonn area. This was my favorite place when our family visited Germany. |
