Affirmation post for Bernd, he put it all right. I don't understand the many thumbs down he got, because the answer is just perfect. I'm German myself and know the holiday calendar. Some public holidays differ from region to region, but Bernd gave a perfect overview of common public holidays in Germany, and how the common "Joe Sixpack" celebrates them.

Most popular and really celebrate by everyone is: Easter and Christmas.

Fenris Troll Ripper JPA RT ATL ®
Just some are

OKTOBER FEST in Bavaria

Zweibal Mark in Thurngia (Onion Market)

That is two I know of and there are more I know for sure but I would have to ask my friends in Germany.

Bernd
6.January - 3 Kings Day (only a holiday in catholic regions)
sometime in February -Carnival monday in Cologne, Mainz and Dusseldorf is where the heart beats
1.Mai - Labour day, like a extra sunday, all go out the night before and dance, drink, eat and so on and on the 1.Mai we all suffer from a hangover
in Mai - Christ goes to Heaven, another day off, some call it Fathers day but it became a sort of general national day to get drunk
sometime in June - Frohnleichnam another funny catholic celebration day
from approx. 20th September til 5th October - Octoberfest in Munich, again everybody who's there gets drunk, same result as above
3.October - National Day of reunification (after the wall came down on the 9.November we became one nation again on this day)
yesterday was Buß and Bettag - this time its a celebration day for Lutheran christians, they think about their sinns and pray for forgiveness.
11. November - Saint Martins day, for children, they march through the streets with a lampion and sing some songs about St.Martin and on each door they get some sweets. Almost like Halloween
6.December - Saint Nicolaus - children put their shoes in front of the door, the night before, and Santa Claus brings some sweets.
24th December - is our Thanksgiving day
25th day off, drink, eat, etc.
26th, day off, hangover from 24th and 25th
