What basic German do you need to know to get a German Visa? ?

I'm a US Citizen hoping to work as an Au Pair in Germany, but I read that you must speak and understand basic German in order to get one. Is that true, and if so, what exactly is "basic German?" (I speak none, other than "Ich liebe dich." and "Trinket bier." :)
Additional Details
ah, well the trinket bier was a joke, I am not so good in german obviously :) And the question was only about the visa, in most cases they want the Au Pair to speak English with the children so they can imporve their English, my question was just about the visa.

I would do the following:

1. Just apply for the visa, don't worry too much about the language.

2. Go to http://www.dw-world.com and start learning German with their free online course.

It is essential for the visa to demonstrate that you intend to learn German. If you only want the Au-pair visa to work in Germany it is a reason to deny the visa to you. Au-pair is for learning the language, and you learn German faster and better if you already have a basic grasp of the grammar and some vocabulary. It also makes dealing with everyday life in Germany easier. Thus the requirement that you know basic German.

u should be able to have a little normal conversation, but if u work as an Au Pair it would be better to speak more than "basic German".
At first forget "Trinket Bier", its wrong grammar and not quite a thing u should say to the family u will be with.

You should be able to greet people, have a quick basic conversation, and you may have to fill out the Visa application in German, though they usually have english printed next to the German. I would not go there if you do not know the language at all, if you stay in the cities, you will be ok, but if you get out into the older parts of the country they might not want to speak english.

Are u sure that you must speak basic german?
Well of course its better to learn it faster when you come to Germany but I know several cases where people came to Germany who knew like 20 words.
I think you dont need to speak German in order to get a working permission.
good luck

you should know phrases like : Wo is der bratwurst kiosk ? - wo findet ein saufgelage statt ? Wulf liebt mich nicht mehr - er bastelt staendig an neuen Trolls um anderen damit auf den Sack zu gehen.

What's the job of an Au Pair?
In general to take care of the family's children!
If you would have children in the US would you expect them to communicate in a foreign language to understand an Au Pair or would you want the Au Pair to speak English to be able to communicate with your children?
So how do you expect that should be different in Germany?
You may only have a chance if a German family decides to get an Au Pair in order to improve the English speaking capabilities of their children, but that's not a common issue, moreless an exception.
