"Nekkra" gave you a list of the important stations. When you are cabled or have satellite TV in Germany (satellite is free over here), then you also have access to lots of foreign TV news channels, like CNN, CNBC, BBC World, SkyNews and also France24, Russia Today, Al Jazeera (in English and Arabic), EuroNews, etc. etc. etc.

Germany's leading news channels are N24 and N-tv (an affiliate station of CNN). But, most Germans are watching the "Tagesschau" at 8 pm for the latest news. You can watch a recorded video stream of their news at http://www.tagesschau.de as well. At 7 pm, the ZDF also broadcasts the news "heute" (today) as well, which also can be seen on demand at http://www.heute.de
And interesting article on the "Tagesschau" is available here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tagesschau And about the "heute" news on ZDF read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heute

I have added some useful websites for you about TV in Germany (see below).

Look ARD 8 pm. Ntv every hours, N24 every hours, RTL 6,45 pm. Also you can watch CNN and BBC too.

6pm ARD/ZDF and several other stations (HF3, MDR, NRW and many others). Those are the "news shows". But there are also shows on RTL, SAT1, Pro7, Vox, RTL2 around 7:30pm that have news and happenings. When in doubt, N24 is a 24 hour news channle and there is another one that is on channel 17 or 18 (satellite). CNN is also on satellite and you may be able to catch MSNBC as well.
