What classes are offered at Gymnasiums in Germany? |
If I get a scholarship to study there next year, it will by my senior year here - not sure what grade or level there. I'll be 18. I know that sports are not included are part of the schools there as much - but is there any way to be involved with track/cross-country? Is that very popular there or should I just suck it up and learn how to play soccer? :)
Also, what language classes are offered? I've heard typically English, French, Italian ... ? Is that about it? |

I went through the German school system. At 18 years old, it will be hard for you to find a school, since german will already have graduated ( Abitur it's called there), but to answer your Question
There are lots of private clubs that offer a variety of sports.
Most popular besides soccer are Volleyball, Handball, but there are some that offer Track.
I actually joined a club and learned how to ride a Unicycle, we went to different competitions. I had lots of fun..
Once you get there it will be easy for you to join some of these clubs. They charge only a moderate fee.
Oh and you can learn any language. Most popular are French and English , one of them is manditory.Spanish and Italian are popular. Lately there has been a great increase in people learning Russian, Japanese and Chinese. And then there is good old Latin for those who want to go into the medical field.
Have fun there, it is a great place and I miss it a lot. |

I am currently coursing the 11. Klasse in a German Gymnasium. I am 17 years old, so i can tell you that you could easily apply to enter the 12. oder 13. Klasse. I have friends with 18 and 19 years old, and this is because gymnasiums here have up to the 13th year, (one more that the USA).
Languages, my school, like most of the german system, has mandatory English, and we get to choose between French, Latin, Italian and Spanish (this last one being the least popular, and not likely to be found in every school).
And in sports, you get to choose as well. There is basketball team, fussball team, volleyball team, and in my school we even have a swimming team. You can get as well includd in afeter school activities like Ski, snowboard and crosscountry.
Cheers~ |

Are you looking into the Congress-Bundestag scholarship? I was in Germany on CB in 03-04 through AFS. I was 17 and in my senior year when I went too, and was placed in the eleventh grade, the year before the students were split up into what I would call their majors, what they would term there "Abi-klassen". This was better for getting to know people
My school didn't have track (something I was interested in too, I ran CC for 3 years in HS) -- but I was on their crew team, which was a blast. There are a lot of local clubs that will usually take you in if you want to play other sports (I did handball this way).
My Gymnasium had russian, french, latin (great way to learn German and English at the same time. . .), mandatory English, and maybe another language or too. . . I don't remember. |
