It's a matter of how you arrange not to feel cold. Some people wear those thick and clumsy parachute jackets and heavy boots which sometimes makes them move around like astronauts on the moon. My option (I live in Bavaria) is somewhat different: The onion principle. Like an onion's seven parings, so your dress should be.
Let's start from the top:
I wear one sleeveless t-shirt, one with short sleeves, two or three sweaters, and my usual leather jacket (won't leave home without it).
Further down, I wear one pair of short underpants, one long one, one pair of "stretchy" jeans, and my usual jeans.
Two or three pairs of socks, the upper one really thick woollen ones. That's important! You start feeling cold at your feet, and once you have cold feet, nothing is fun anymore.
Boots. Nothing special, just boots.
A bag. A big one.
The advantage of this is: In case it gets warmer during the day, you can easily get rid of some of your "onion clothing" everywhere, like in a public or restaurant washroom. -- That's why you'll need the big bag: To store excess clothing. And you can easily re-dress when it gets colder in the evening.
Of course I don't dress like that when I just want to go to a restaurant or exhibition in the evening. There's taxis. But for walking around town, there is nothing better.
You should have an overcoat, but if you dress like I described, all it has to be is some sort of rainproof.
There's no real solution, however, to keep one's hair in style. I'm wearing a hat (see avatar). Umbrellas are useless and can be dangerous when used on sidewalks. |

You better bring some warm clothes with you. The weather change in Germany very quickly. Right now is autumn and I feel this year is so early. Have fun.... |

Hi I live in Munich so can probably help you out here. The wearhter can be very variable, so the best thing I think is to pack layers and definitely include a coat in the packing! I don't think you neccesarily need a long coat, a regular length one should be just fine. German cities are great ones to be walked so it is good to pack for the weather. Although, the public transportation is also great if you find it too cold for walking!
I'd say a sweater is not enough. I'd also reco that if you're wearing a swaeter on a cold day it is layered over a long sleeve shirt or T shirt length sleeve shirt as it can get quite toasty inside if you are getting into all the activities in a beer hall!
In addition to the coat/ sweater question, I'd also say the most important investment you can make before going is a good pair of shoes that are comfy to walk in. Lots of cobblestone/ uneven streets and sidewalks. For women boots are really popular. (Just under the knee height/ brown or black/ flat or slightly elevated with a really wide heel.) Also hiking style gym shoes/ ankle boots. The "white gym shoes" are almost an immediate give away that you're American.
Hope this helps! Enjoy your visit to two great cities in a beautiful country. Viel spass! |

Depends where are you from. If you are from San Diego or Florida, you might need more clothing. If you are from the north like Oregon or Maine or Vermont (it is a good example.) dress like you would there.
The weather is very much like Vermont weather. Many areas in south Germany look like the rolling hills in Vermont. Being you are going to be in the cities Berlin and Munich, you will probably spend a lot of time in doors seeing museum and such . . . You will be taking that jacket or coat off. The Germans like it hot in doors. |
