Honestly I learned the hard way with travelers checks their.

MANY places did not take those or American Express cards, just Vis and MC so not that you CANT use them but so many places I have been too it either dont accept or it cost you a fortune in transfer fees! First have to pay for the checks than pay to have to used then pay if want them converted back.

I generally prefer to use some cash and my Visa/MC debit which works in their Geldomatics as our ATMS do.

A bank WILL allow you to convert them of course, it is small shops and stores that may not accept them as well as an American Express card.

Maybe plan on both?? Take some with you, some cash and have your Visa debit ready!! You can get prepaid ones too!

What city or village are you going to maybe you can find out how well they are accepted in that region?

@Rudolf - Yes that is the real problem with them, you get charged to buy them and then you get charged to cash them there, so after you buy them and cash them in you have lost more money!!! That is why I prefer using my Visa Debit card in the geldomatics personally. I used AA and AAA traveler checks and the cost after was too much in comparison. Then their are weekends, what if you need money on the weekend? Banks are closed there you have only the Geldomatics.

no travellers checks they are a pain in the butt. take a credit card and you will have no problem at all and it is the cheapest way to go ATM is the word

Hi,

in my opinion, traveler's checks are a real pain to cash in. You usually can't use them in any shops, you have to go to the bank that sold it to you and cash it in there.

Bank hours are less than convenient....

Best way to have money during your trip to Germany is either a credit card (though not accepted for smaller amounts) or an electronic debit card.
If you use visa or master (maestro) you can get cash at almost every bank machine in Germany and there are thousands of them at every corner.

I was in Germany last summer and bought EURO's from my bank before my trip. I was also able to use my Visa check card with no problem at all. It was accepted all over Germany. I would bother with traveler's checks. They are not necessary.

Same answers, whether you go to France or to Germany.

Traveller's cheques are useless.
