Frankfurt am Main is the full name of the city of Frankfurt.
It would be translated Frankfurt on the Main.
The full name is also used to make a difference between the other Frankfurt in the east of Germany which is Frankfurt an der Oder.
Frankfurt Messe is the fair ground.

@Destiny If you don't know 'fair ' in English has the two meanings in German 'Messe' and 'Volksfest' rather keep away from answering and at least from correcting people who do know better than you do !!!

The other people here have answered this question correctly, though it seems not very clearly. The river that bisects the city of Frankfurt is called the "Main" river. So this is the city Frankfurt that is "on" the "Main" river. And yes, this distinguishes this city from other cities in Germany which are also named Frankfurt. (Kind of like how there are so many Springfields in the US, so you have to always specify which one you're talking about.)

"Messe" isn't exactly "fair grounds" as one would understand fair grounds to mean in the US. There aren't tractor pulls and 4H contests. :-) Instead, I would translate it more as "convention center" to convey the actual meaning here. It is a huge mass of buildings together where conventions/ trade fairs can be held. So it is "fair" in that sense of the word. So to translate the meaning I'd say "Frankfurt Convention Center".

I don't think any of these people have been to Frankfurt. They are trying to directly translate a word rather than speak of personal experience.

Anyways, the Frankfurt Messe is a convention center. It is located in the heart of Frankfurt and just off a very large traffic circle. Just down the street from the Main station, it's very easy to get to.

Other cities have a "messe" and they mean diffrent things in diffrent places. In Frankufurts case there is no fair ground (there). You wont see ferris wheels and rides that make you barf at the Frankfurt Messe.

Frankfurt am Main means "Frankfurt on the Main". The Main is the river that gently flows through Frankfurt.

The Frankfurter Messe is definately N O T a..."fairground"...You're mixing up something, which is also called:"Messe"...which is in general : a fairground...BUT: in this case -The Frankfurter Messe is a H U G E location were they hold different --EXHIBITIONS-- of various "fields"
(books, electronic equipment, tools, etc..
