nerdy twit (trendy wit)

What do German people like to do for fun?

I don't mean things like board games and video games. I'd like to know about things that might be interesting. Are they boating fanatics? Are they obsessed with wood carving? Preferably the things that almost everyone [in Germany] does.
Additional Details
what I mean is, some people play a game called schafkopf. I've never heard of it anywhere else. that's the kind of thing I want to know. Things they do that other people might find interesting. Yes I realize they probably do a lot of things we do, but those don't make for very interesting topics.

Some Germans play cards in the restaurants. I don't know how to play it, but I havewatched friends as they played it. My kids play it.

Sure we have all those video games stuff and MTV and VIVA . . . I have a hobby basement with all kinds of "modern" stuff with the plasma, but . . . that is not necessarily german.

Some like to go to the sauna.

Many Germans are involved in some kind of "verein" which is a club. Unlike America where sports normally take place in the local areas, high schools and universities. Germany and like many other european countries have clubs. Your club "battles" its way up to the different heirarchy of leagues whether it be soccer or basketball etc etc

The clubs are not limited to sports. They have various music clubs that often involved brass instruments. Almost every community has a large music band. Almost every community has a volunteer fire department. They not only help out the professional firemen. They are often the right hand to the each of the mayor's city activities. Almost every German community has a low caliber light arms marksman club.

The Germans appreciate and make the best of their free time as well. They do not just take a vacation. They go to lengths to just be lazy or rather relax for those two to six weeks.

The Germans even have these recreation bowling clubs (small lanes with hand head balls) not to be confused with the normal bowling. They have normal bowling teams. It is often for just relaxing.

Although not all Germans are heavily into their cultural activities, you have those who keep the cultural dress alive. You have those who are involved in Fasching. Fasching for these people is not just from the 11 of November until Ash Wednesday. There is a lot of planning that is involved in the off season. That is where the real work is and I guess it is fun. I was involved in Fasching. Actually, I was a prince so it was fun, but a lot of work.

I have lived here for over 20 years. I have been involved with almost everyone of these activities more or less. Vereins or rather clubs really define the Germans activities in daily life. There are all kinds of clubs (vereins). I am even involved in a "creativity club" that tries to encourage creativity.

Lots of bike ways for bike riding and roller blading. Lots of rivers and lakes for canoes, windsurfing and sailboating. Lots of mountains for skiing, snowboarding and bobsleding. Lots of areas to just go walking. Germans do a lot of recreational walking. I live out in the country. If I am not jogging, I go walking almost every day. See a fox. See a deer. See a beaver. See a stork almost every day in the summer. Saw a hedge hog yesterday. Not a good time for the hedge hog. They get run over a lot.

The Germans also take part in their seasons. Christmas outside the commercialized type of Christmas which has invaded germany. The germans have their Xmas markets which are very beautiful and different.

In Fasching, the season normally takes off in january and runs into late February. There are people who really like this season.

In summer, there are the beer feasts and feasts in general. Different communities have specific feasts for the summer. Sure there is beer, but it is not all about beer. It is often about getting friends and family together in the community. Some are huge feast which I avoid nowadays. Some are small feasts. Those are the ones I usually attend.

Germans have lots of holidays that often involves some sort of activity. Germans love their furniture stores. They are huge stores and are interesting to walk through. Germans love their hardware stores. They are huge and Germans often build and repair their own houses. Germans love their plant nurseries. They are also huge with an abundance of plant choices. By trade, I am landscaper.

Yeah, we are all drinking wine while we are sitting in our boats carving wood... LOL
One can't generalize such a huge amount of people to one activity. Playing soccer or watching soccer being played is a big thing over here. Basically watching any kind of spectator sport, just like in other countries, too. Hiking is supposed to be a big past time, as is fishing, biking, nordic walking, dog training... Ask ten Germans, and you'll get 10 answers. (OK, ask ten men and you'll get three answers. 8 will tell you something to do with soccer, the others will have different hobbies) ;)

I've got one thing all people in Germany really enjoy doing! Breathing! we do that a lot. Every day, actually.... ;))

There is hardly any germans that I know, sitting at home watching TV,for a lifestyle.Germans are always on the go somehow and for good reasons.
Because this country is so beautiful you will see many of them walking(like through parks or downtown by the market squares),riding bikes(Going on long bike tours) Traveling (Germans are one of the front runners when it comes to that) Sightseeing (and not only in the summer times) exploring all the awesome castles and historical sites.
They love sports , foremost soccer.Especially the man!(It's funny most german man who are most crazy about soccer, don't play it.The watch it either on television or go to games every sunday)Oh yes an Formula 1 is # 2 Sport in Germany.I would say even more than Nascars in the US.
Well, they like mostly anything was has to do with moving and exploring.Fast cars- and they have the best!Germans love their cars and the fact that they are able to drive it to the limit , FAST on the Autobahn .
Hiking, swimming, kayaking,Very outdoors. They like to drink wine but to a certain extend.Wine is culture in Germany and so is beer, which is very strong and harder to handle by non-germans!
They like to go out to eat with friends and family. This can take a long time though.Germans enjoy this time away from home and work by eating and talking and eating and talking and....I think you get my point.
And playing Schafkopf or other cardgames like Skat. Many are in teams and other play it when they go out to a bar.
Now don't ask me the rules of this game, never played it,Sorry
