I'm half and half, so maybe biased. ;)
From what I feel myself, the "average" German mainly thinks about the Queen, David Beckham and tea when thinking about England.
Common stereotypes include horrible food (which, to an extent, is true, sorry), people who behave rather stuck-up when sober and incredibly rude when drunk, people of all ages and genders drinking way too much way too often (the Brits invented the binge) and men being football-crazy (something Germans can relate to). Brits also have a reputation of being extremely polite (especially older generations), which is hard for me to judge as I grew up there and never thought about it before I moved.
Brits are also thought to have great rock music (think about bands such as Oasis or the Kaiser Chiefs who are popular in Germany) and a bit of a knack for strange hobbies... whenever you hear about a particularly stupid or useless competition including farmers digging up worms, people running marathons in ridiculous costumes etc., it's usually happening in England. ;) |

Do u mean Great Britain or England or the people of Britain??
I can`t say that for all Germans but for me i really really love the British Comedy like Monty Python, Little Britain, Coupling and so on..
Then they have good football teams and players (my favourite brit. player is joe cole and lampard).
Very good music artists / bands.
Strange but funny competitions like *MG* said. |

They mostly don't . . .
Germans compare themselves and things mostly to USA when it comes down to it. It was often frustrating when I had to sit to some classes and I sometimes are argued USA is not the only country in the world. I am an US American. |

They have always admired Britain and have been jealous of Britain. Britain had an empire and ran the world at one time and the Germans could never do this. The only time they tried was with Hitler and that was one of the darkest chapters in history.
I still think Germans are jealous of Britain. After all, Germany started and lost two world wars and Britain was victorious. Germany could never invade or beat Britain and the British would never surrender to the Germans.
It surprises me that none of you mentioned the wars... |
