What do a native German 23 yr old female generally eat for lunch? |
I know that is a difficult question to ask and the diet may change based on personal preference.
But, my son's Germany female friend (from south west Germany) doing her graduate studies (at a university at south east Netherlands) will fly to america staying in my house for 2 weeks, and I need to prepare her lunch while my son is working during the day.
Any suggestions of some simple dishes or sandwiches (bread, meat, bread spread & vegetable) that make her feel at home? Thanks.
I do indend to cook the american way for DINNER as I have other family members to take care of, and I do hope to introduce her to american food for dinners. |

Bread, cold cuts, cheese, and cucumbers. Maybe some potato salad. |

I would be disappointed if had the chance to eat at an American family and they would serve something German! When I'm abroad I'm always interested in the typical food and dishes...and I think she'll be the same. But if you really want to please her look for a German bread shop and get her German bread...German bread is the only thing German people living in America miss! |

there really isn`t a difference between american and german food. germans eat a variety of all kinds of foods. as long as it`s balanced and fairly healthy I`m sure your guest will not be expecting to be treated any different than your other familiy members. what her personal preferences are is another matter. but i`m sure there are americans who for instance dislike fish or raw onions. i`m sure you`ll be a great hostess and she`ll be happy and grateful to be invited to your dinnertable. maybe you could even ask her to cook "germanstyle" for the family. i went to the united states when i was twenty years old, i later found out how anxious my mother-in-law-to-be was about dinner and let me tell you - you have nothing to worry about, she`ll be much more anxious and happy to be trying out new dishes. |

Don't worry too much about this. Young women use to be VERY self-reliant. But I don't think that she will miss anything. If I were your guest, I would not like to get a special meal. I would be sooo curious to taste what you use to prepare, and I guess that the young lady will be the same. And as all the old customs are vanishing everywhere, it's not usual anymore that people in Germany have their warm meal at noon. Just like me they tend to cook in the evening, when the work is done and they finally have got the time. |

First of all I think it's very nice of you wanting to make her feel a little like home food-wise. How about asking her about her lunch preferences before she arrives as it is very difficult to give a general rule.
Yes, for many Germans lunch is the main meal during the day. But on the other side a large number of Germans eats only a salad, a soup, a yogurt or a sandwich (German bread with crust) for lunch so they are not filled up for the rest of the day while working.
From my own experience I know that many Germans do miss the German bread the most when they live in the states. We are not used to eat "soft" bread as most Americans are. Guess she might be that way too. So if you have a Jewish, German or any artisan bakery in your city that might be a good place to look for some darker, "harder" bread with a "real" crust for her.
Good luck with your efforts! |

just make sure you always have yogurt, fresh fruits, veggies and salad in the house. and, let´s say, pasta and cheese. all those will go a long way. |

Been to Germany and Holland, both countries usually eat their biggest meal midday. Schnitzels and warm potatoe salad or warm pickled red cabbage. Rye bread with german cheese/salami open faced and good german beer to wash it down with. Or grilled rueben sandwich (pastrami, german mustard, swiss cheese and sourkraut) Need any cooking ideas?
