What do you make of the neo-Nazis attacking Passau's Police Chief?

Do you think there is a real problem with neo-Nazis in Germany? It seems like it is on the rise. We never hear of neo-Nazis in Canada.
Additional Details
Elwin: From what I have seen in der Spiegel and other media sources, it definitely does seem like a neo-Nazi attack. Hasn't
there even been a confession of sorts?
I always remember Passau as the home town of the "schreckliches Maedchen". It was a film about a girl who uncovered the Nazi past of her town and was thus alienated by the town folk. It is based on a true story and the town is supposed to be Passau.

Your whole explanation about knives lying around makes no sense to me. If the perps wanted to kill or injure the police chief why wouldn't they just bring their own knife? And who leaves knives lying around outside their house anyway?. Very odd.

C'mon! Don't tell me you don't have German nazis in Canada. Some even sought refuge there, and Canadian internet hosters are all-too-willing to host their propaganda. (Don't misunderstand me, I love it that you do that in Canada, because it's the only way that I can get informed about their way of thinking here in Germany.)

Now to the Passau chief: There are some things in that story that don't really make me believe it was a nazi attack. First, the thing with the knife attack. He allegedly had that knife in the garden because it is customs before christmas that neighbors come and cut off a piece of a big "Lebkuchen", or christmas cake. That may be true; but why the hell didn't he refrain from that customs when he knew that there were people around wanting to kill him?

I live in Bavaria some kilometers away from Passau, and the whole thing sounds strange to me. If that really was a neo-nazi attack, then why doesn't the city of Passau do anything about the hidden nazis e.g. in their university? They politely call them conservatives, and I can't believe that a police chief in a city like that would have become chief if he wasn't conservative either. No. There must be more behind it than that. I think the whole fuss about a nazi attack is a smokescreen to hide the real reasons.

To me, it simply boils down to one thing: A guy wanted to give the police chief a decent beating, probably was drunk (or under other influence), found that knife, and used it. No neo-nazi involved here. If I were a judge (gladly I'm not): Three years probation, and some hundred hours of social work.

---
edit:
It's not odd, it's real customs in that corner of Bavaria. And why should exactly a neo-nazi have attempted to kill their police chief? Passau is a border town, and there are more things going on that I am ready to publicly tell. My opinion is that many people may have had a reason for such kind of assault, but NO nazi. Never.

Poppy_I.
There was no confession so far. The news say, that they have arrested a married couple belonging to a small extreme Nazi group, where the wife was seen with the guy they search for.

It is hard to say, what is true. The Nazi-internet-pages go crazy and shout "scapegoat", but then again - it might be true.

What makes me consider twice, is actually Alwin E's statement here. So often I met him on YC, giving very good answers. I could always support his statements 100%. So - well - he is from the area.

Perhaps this time it wasn't Nazis. Often enough, they are, it would not really hurt them if they were in trouble this time - innocent. At least once!

But, there is not a real large problem with Nazis here. Not yet.
There are too many Germans like myself who are very observant on the problem.

The bad economic situation develops a lot of youngsters having no job / no future. Those kids are collected by Nazi groups using comrade scenes to make them feel home, then the inculcate them with their weird ideas.

This large attention on this case now might help keeping those young guys away by offering more recreational possibilities to them again (the monies for that were shortened due to the bad economic situation).

You might never hear about Neonazis in Canada, but your neighbor country, the USA, has lots of them, keeping internet pages open for the German Nazis to hold their connections. In Germany it would not be possible to keep those pages. Perhaps that is, what Alwin means.

It is on the rise.

The sad thing is, the neo-Nazi groups find anyone who is unemployed, disenchanted with their life or, basically going through life aimlessly. When they find people like that, they attempt to recruit them.

That is where the neo-Nazi skinheads usually come from. It gives them a sense of belonging. But, They belong to the wrong group.
