What is a Bayern ticket?

How is this train ticket acquired in Munich? What does it cost? How many people can use it? Is it valid for trips that start or end in Austria?

I just read through the original Deutsche Bahn website in German.

They clearly say that it is for use primarily in Bavaria - but there are two exceptions where it may be used in Austria: in Salzburg and Kufstein.

You can buy this ticket at the main train station in Munich (Hauptbahnhof) or at the East train station (Ostbahnhof) - either go to the counter, or buy it directly from one of the ticket vending machines set up in the main hall. They are pretty easy to use, and take credit cards (your bank debit card won't work.)

The ticket costs 27 Euros, and is valid for up to 5 people.

On regular work days (Monday - Friday) it's valid from 9am to 3am the following day; on the weekends and public holidays it's valid from midnight until 3am the following day.

There is a night version, which costs 19 Euros, and is valid for up to 5 people on regular work days (Monday - Friday) from 6pm until 6am the following day; or on weekends / holiday from 6pm until 7am the following day.

Finally - there is a "single" Bayern Ticket, valid for the times above, which costs 19 Euros and may be used by just one person. It is not transferrable - you have to write your name on it!

Hope this helps, have fun exploring Bavaria by train! (trains are really easy to use, you see the scenery, and no worries with horrible traffic jams) :)

According to my source cited below:

Bayern-Ticket (Bavaria-Ticket)

Package price EUR 27 if you buy your ticket online or at the ticket machine. EUR 29 if you purchase your ticket at the ReiseZentrum.
This ticket is valid from Monday to Sunday for one day of your choice from 9 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day (on bank holidays for the whole day)on Saturday and Sunday and bank holidays from from 0 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day. It can be used on all local trains (Interregio-Express, Regional-Express, Regionalbahn, S-Bahn) and the entire transport system in Bavaria as well as the Münchner Verkehrsbund (MVV) and Verkehrsverbund Nürnberg (VGN), Augsburger Verkehrs- und Tarifverbundes (AVV) and many more.

Bayern-Ticket Single (Bavaria-Ticket Single)

EUR 19 if you buy your ticket online or at the ticket machine. EUR 21 if you purchase your ticket at the Reisezentrum. This offer is only for one persons, same conditions as Bavaria-Ticket.

Bayern-Ticket Nacht (Bavaria-Night-Ticket )

New: valid Monday to Thursday from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next day, Monday and Friday from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m if you book online for only 19 EUR., at the ticket machine or at the Reisezentrum 21 EUR.

In addition to the answer before:
the Bayern ticket is only valid in Bavaria, which means, it's not valid for Austria.

Up to five persons can use the Bayern ticket.
