If you have children, take them to Hameln (the story town from pide piper story). Its a 45 minutes train journey from Hannover.

Or if you are more into history, museum and if you like to have a good shopping experience, you should go to Berlin (its a 2 hour journey by train).

Hamburg is quite near, and I also think the Netherlands are not really far. -- I completely agree with the Hameln suggestion, however. I've not been there yet, but their website (especially the chapter about the "pied piper tour") looks somewhat promising. If I ever come back to that area again (next CeBIT, maybe), I'll watch out for that.

Hamburg would be a great choice - a million things to do in Germany´s favorite city.

From Hannover you could go to the "Brocken" / Harz :
http://www.hannover.de/english/tourism_culture/sightseeing/nature_landscapes/harz1.html

Since the reunification of Germany, the Harz is no longer divided up by political borders, so it is even more popular than it was before. Tourists from east and west meet at the Brocken (1142 m.), the highest point in the Harz.

Hannover to the Harz it takes about 1 hour drive.

You could also visit Braunschweig :
(it also takes about 1 hour from Hannover to BS)
