What is meant by a "superior room" in German hotels?
I see that many rooms have a "superior room" available for an additional 15 Euros or $20 per night. I'm not sure what I'd be getting for this additional price, though.
Normally, that would be a hotel room that has some extras compared to the other hotel rooms. For example, it could be freshly renovated, or be bigger, or offer a huge TV set, or have a great view, or it's a very quiet room.
Communal bathrooms are very rare in German hotels. Usually, every room has at least a toilet and a shower. Of course, there are also differences in size and equipment.
If you are unsure, just contact the hotel and ask them directly. Many hotels also have websites, so you might be able to find out something there.

There's no specific meaning attached to this as far as I know, it's just a marketing expression used by some hotels. You will need to check with every one of them to see what their offer includes.

One which has it's own bathroom instead of a communal one in the hallway. I once stayed at a pension which really had the communal bathroom. Never again.
