The sales tax (Mehrwehrsteuer or MWSt) is usually included in the ticketed price unlike in the U.S., where it is added to the sale price at check-out. The current sales tax in Germany is 19%.

When you come here as a tourist and shop at a supermarket, you'll probably be surprised: There's no additional sales tax raised on the counter or at checkout. It's really "what you see is what you get", because prices at stores ALWAYS MUST include the federal sales tax (or value added tax, VAT) of 19% (or 7% for basic foods and newspapers).

As to who pays the taxes, and how, these things will become important to you when you're running a business.

CheGuevara
There's dozens of different taxes in Germany. Describing them and how they each work fills a whole shelf of books.

The descripitons above is correct. Although the VAT is called "Umsatzsteuer". "Mehrwertsteuer" is colloquial.
