What is the German/Austrian personality? |

Well, I would say you start out mixing apples and oranges--Austrians are not German, and Germans are not Austrians, although both below to the German Nation. You might want to start out looking at regional customs and charactor. For example, a Bavarian would not have the same customs and charactor as would a Hessen, even though both are states of Germany. Nor would an Oberfranke have the same customs and charactor as an Oberpfaelzer even though both are regions within Bavaria. Believe it or not, those regions do make a difference.
Could a European legitimately ask the question, "How is the general American personality within their country," and get an accurate answer? I think not. Or, do you believe someone from Texas displays the same general characteristics as someone from Jersey or New York? Alabama? Southern California?
Put this in perspective. |

Its the same as american just they are a little more humble...(except for the younger folks they are cocky..........normally your ''Auslanders'')...So as soldier5577 said he loves it here welfare pays about 2000 euros a month depending on how many kids you have...I say this because his oulook seems very negative. Germany provides an education for children that is almost free and sorry to say there are not many jobs here anymore unless you are ''Selbstandig'' (like me) before i got my idea to build houses myself I sent off 142 applications and no one answered me back or it was a sorry you too ''overqualified and dont fit into our budget'' Germany is almost like the states, they are all in debt.....mostly because a normal house cost 250000euros and the lot costs another 250000 euros...then they buy 40,000 euro cars and so on and such.......you have the savers and the spenders and the unemployed.....but to answer your questions again the germany personality is awesome. many nice people here who like ''certain americans'' what i mean by this is very humble americans that will work and help in the wine yards for FREE....or maybe for a six pack of beer...(by the way this is backbreaking work...) But the point is you help for nothing because its your neighbors and nothing else....The people know how to ''stick together'' which is more than what i can say for neighbors and most people back in the States.... |

I know a girl she is half German she is really cool and nice and sweet, and proud of her origin and country. I think Germans r good people. Germans r usually presented as harsh and strong people that don't care about others. That is NOT true! Usually people who don't know anything about that country write bad things about Germans. But German people r wonderful people indeed.
Go Germans! |

The same as anywhere else in the world really. There is good and bad everywhere. Some will make you laugh, others are very serious about the world and so on, and so on.
Go there and see for yourself! |

> the language is old and traditional and needs updating
As a born German, I strongly reject to this proposal, and obviously, there's an American in Germany who thinks the same, and who's blogging in English:

Aren't we fantastic engineers? Beer drinking and hell raising, that's our style, well, yeah.
As a matter of fact, there are as many different personal styles in Germany and Austria, as are in every other country in the world; but as our styles are more American-influenced than probably ANYWHERE, you might feel better in these two countries than anywhere else in the world. And be it only that most of the younger people speak English over here. |

Hi Im married to a German and my wife is a pain in the Ar se lol, even though I love her to bits. The Germans are a very strange nation, I have lived and worked here 19 years, the language is old and traditional and needs updating if that makes any sense. The people are genuinly friendly, however once they get behind the wheel of a car most of them become the most arrogant and ignorant people you could ever meet.
However saying that I am now living in Germany as I have finished my Military career and I have no intention of going back to England as life is so much better here for me and the kids. And no I am not unpatriotic as 23 years in the Army shows that im a true Englishman and proud of it. |

Germany is split between north and south. Much as is the USA. Southern Germans are considered, by those in the north, as being country bumpkins or Huckleberries, each with with pejorative texture.
South Germans like to drink beer and party. Cannot testify to their brothers in the north.
Never was in Austria, but I'll bet it's similar to Southern Germany, EXCEPT in Vienna (High Culture-Hochkultur). |
