What is the German Reeperbahn?

In addition to the other answers, please note that the street name "Reeperbahn" is rather common in Northern Germany and will occur in many towns. The literal translation of "Reeperbahn" would be "Ropemaker lane" and such a road can exist in any harbour town. I know for sure that the cities Eckernförde and Kiel have a "Reeperbahn", but only the one in Hamburg is notorious for its amusement and red-light establishments.

The Reeperbahn is a street in Hamburg's St. Pauli district, the centre of Hamburg's nightlife and also the city's red-light district. In German it is also called "die sündige Meile" ("the sinful mile"), or simply "der Kiez".

This place is located in the city Hamburg and called red-light-district. Not a good place to walk or visit.

It is a street in Hamburg, well-known because prostitutes and punters gather there. It also has strip clubs, sex shops etc.

Basically, it's a red-light area like the one in Amsterdam, where tourists are attracted as well.

It is a famous street in the Hamburg red light district - with many bars, adult entertainment places - but also wonderful theaters. Try restaurant "Freudenhaus" - great German food or restaurant EAST in the EAST hotel: American Asian food.
