I have always found that travel agents are your best bet.

Since they're so close, I bet there is a train or a bus.

Again, a travel agent can give you all your alternatives and the prices too.

the euro rail

Probably by train although airfares are ridiculously cheap between close together cities like that...interesting---hmmm-- I would guess air or train would not be that much apart in price...but I enjoy a nice train ride...

There is a train roughly every two hours which costs regular fare around 100€ and takes something around 6 to 7 hours.
With a little luck you could get a special offer, but as these are limited you should try to book it as soon as possible.
You can find all information and book tickets under http://www.bahn.de/-S:PtVOR9:eZQKNNNNdrT6hNNNNWVM/p/view/international/englisch/international_guests.shtml It's in English.

Pack a lunch and start walkin'

Try looking at a "share a ride" website in Germany, i.e www.mitfahrzentrale.de. Drivers are looking for passengers and payment is about 5 cents per km. There are many others listed under "Mitfahrzentrale".
