The best way is complete immersion. Move there. Enjoy.

It may be intimidating at first, but view it as an adventure. Remember that you will never speak it as a native, but at least you are trying. I find most people will cut you a lot of slack just for trying to speak their language (even the hateful French, until they realize I am an American who speaks fluent German - ah, what can you do?).

The best "compliment" I ever received was when I moved to Heidelberg from Ulm. The other students laughed at my accent. only they weren't laughing at my American accent - oh, no. They were laughing because I spoke German with a Bavarian accent!

But the Germans, as a general rule, are very understanding about struggling with their language. The biggest problem will probably be too many Germans wanting to practice their English with you.

If you visit germany and talk to the people most people speak a little english which would it make easier to learn te language. Maybe you shlould take german class. its best to just go to Germany and just start talking with people , it helped me . As far as tapes and stuff like that go ...i have no clue

If you are a beginner you should skip that grammar-stuff like "der, die, das" and start with simple S.V.O. sentences to make yourself understood.

-Learning in pictures and context works fine for me;
e.g. "Der Baum ist im Wald" and being in a forest is easier than memorizing tree=Baum...

i think the best way is to be in germany. when i moved there i knew no german at all and after 6 months i could read and write german.

I am considering a CD or mp3 German language program to learn the language. My library has the CD's so I can do that for free. Not the same as having a real teacher, but it will be a great start! You can get Berlitz German lessons for $12!

Deutsch Direkt with the BBC or go there and learn it first hand, start in Northern Germany and finish in the south, 12 months. Fun,Fun.

Go to Germany for a month or two, or you could even live and work there. You will get used to the language better because you will be hearing it all the time.It's the quickest and easiest way. I learn't Spanish that way, I moved to Spain with my mum and she put me in a public Spanish school. I didn't know a word when I first arrived but after 6 months I could understand what people were saying and could talk a bit and by the yea,r I was totally fluent with the accent and everything. People can take up to 4 years to learn a language fluently in normal classes and to think people in my school have been learning English since they started primary school (I've just finnished secondry school) and still can only say "hello, how are you and what time is it" I even have to remind them how to say it sometimes. Listening to German television will also help alot it makes your ear get used to the way they talk and the accent and all that.

In my openion is go buy some phrase books and CDs or just phrase books then start learning the verbs and how to make a sentence .. and this really works for me when i stick the meanings of everything in my home on a paper with big letters so i always say the word in whatever language im learning... it really works.. i did it with portuguese and german... try it!

and yeah dont forgot to watch german channels and try to understand anything even pick any words u know (my teacher said that)

Why don't you consider joining a class... or another way is to find a friend who speaks german..
