What is the difference between Berlin's "S-Bahn" and "Straßenbahn"?

What is the difference between Berlin's "S-Bahn" and "Straßenbahn"? I know the Straßenbahn travels in the road with cars and bicyclers, but does the S-Bahn as well? Is it isolated on its own tracks?

Straßenbahn is a streetcar system which operates on regular roads with low entry vehicles.

The "S" in "S-Bahn" stands for "schnell" (= fast, in English), not for "Straße" (= street), and indicates that the "S-Bahn" is a faster means of transportation into the suburbs as the normal "overland" trains which (usually) stop there as well. The "Straßenbahn" is a means of transportation simply for inner-city travel.

You got it right. The S-Bahn travels on its own separated tracks above and underground, while the Strassenbahn travels in the road.

lol, the difference is not in cars, but in their purpose.

S-Bahn is used for fast commuting from suburbs to the city, and Straßenbahn is for the city only. That's why S-Bahn is as fast as it can be, and Straßenbahn makes that many stops in the city. And that's why the speed required S-Bahn cars to be built in the way they currently look.

Please notice, that S-Bahn differs from U-Bahn ;)
So, pictures below are not the best example of S-Bahn.

S-Bahn and Straßenbahn is the same i think. The S is for Straßenbahn.....its a abbreviation.
