Do take the train as mentioned. There are special offers through Die Bahn to get to Amsterdam cheap. 19 or 29 euros for 2nd class seats on the ICE train. Make sure your date and time for travel are firm since there are no refunds offered. ICE train is one of the fastest trains you can take in Germany.
ICE travel is 2hr & 12 min to Amsterdam Centraal. Trains depart from Düsseldorf Hbf(main station) at 08:40, 10:40, 14:40 - check diebahn.de for more departures. You can book your tickets at the station a few days prior to your departure or if you want over the internet. Bring a printed copy of the time/train you want to take just incase that DB agent doesn't speak English.

Try the train - is often quite economical, and doesn't take so terribly long. Check the first link below - it is the English-language website for the German Rail (Deutsche Bahn).
Taking an express train (ICE) will take you just about 2 hours and a quarter.
You can also check for cheap flights - but am not sure it will be worth it, for that short of a distance! Try Deutsche BA (second link below) or search on Expedia.de.

The distance is approx. 140 miles.
By car it will take you about 2 hours 20 min.
There are flights from DUS to Amsterdam, however, the most convenient way would be to go by train. Check http://www.bahn.de
