It's neither, it's Arbeitslosengeld, which is often abbreviated to ALG. There's ALG I and ALG II right now in Germany. With ALG I, you get 60% of what you last earned (67% if you have kids), and you can get ALG I for between 6 and 18 months.
Now to make things worse and add some more numbers and abbreviations, ALG II is usually called Hartz IV (after Peter hartz, the man who invented it). This is what you get after you got ALG I or if you don't qualify for ALG I. There are many restrictions and rules under which you can be given less, but the basic amount is around 350 euros per month. |

BTW, Foreigners cannot recieve ALG II. If they do so it is a cause of deportation from the country - even for EU citizens. |
