Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most recognizable and beautiful castles in Europe. Located in the southern state of Bavaria, Germany, Neuschwanstein is visited by millions of visitors every year. Neuschwanstein is the most photographed building in Germany but photography of the castle's interior is not permitted. Therefore, it is well worth the trip to visit this extraordinary fairy tale castle.

As to tourists, I suppose it's Neuschwanstein, as has already been mentioned. As to history, I suppose it's the Wartburg, where Martin Luther allegedly wrote the first German translation of the Bible while he was under arrest there.

It can be visited again since the German reunification in 1990.

Neuschwanstein, in southern Bavaria, is arguably the most famous castle in Germany and one of the most famous castles in the world. Other well-known and often-visited castles in Germany include Burgruine Heidelberg, Burg Eltz, Burg Marksburg, Reichsburg Cochem, and the Kaiserberg in Nurnberg--there are many, many more. Germany has hundreds of castles and all are worth seeing.
