What is the national flower of Germany? Why was it chosen?

The oak leaf is Germany's national symbol; it's depicted on German eurocent coins. Wikipedia explains the "Eichenlaub" as follows (rough translation from German Wikipedia):

The oak's hard wood and its characteristical leaves which fall late in autumn have made it a symbol of immortality and pertinacity since Germanic times. In later times, especially since the era of Romanticism, it has also become a symbol of faithfulness.

Looking for a national flower is hard. There are at least three options:
- The EdelweiÃŸ, used in the army as a symbol for bravery, and sort of Bavaria's national flower, as it grows in the Alps
- The daisy, as it can be found everywhere
- The dandelion, as it abounds in spring and makes you look forward to summer because of its bright yellow color
But none of these can really be called a "national" flower.

no need for a national flower.
we have other symbols like the Eagle in our Flag.

as mentioned earlier the oak leave comes close to it.
we love flowers but never been asked to choose one as our national flower.

there are two national symbols in germany. the brandenburg gate and the oak tree.
no flower.
but in the german army the edelweiss flower is used as a mention for bravery. so if you need a flower - take the edelweiss.

Well this is not a national flower nor is it even locale normally to Germany but it was brought over from Goethe in the 18th Century to Weimar and it is called the Ginko leaf.

The other answers are correct so no reason to add more other than the above.

Again it is not their national flower, just an un ordinary one that now grows there thanks to Goethe who wrote Faust.

We donÂ´t have a national flower in Germany :-) But you can take the Edelweiss, itÂ´s typical for Bavaria. Or maybe the daisy, we have loads of them.

Germany has no national flower! There's just the oak leaf! But some people sax 'lilies of the valley' are typical German.

Well, take the Edelweiss or the oak- leave. But actually we haven't got a national flower. Well, we've got the oak- tree. ( oak leaves were painted on the old coins.)
