It is really funny that there are still so many people out there who think that German's in general like to eat Sauerkraut, Bratwurst and what ever ends in Wurst.
Then there is also the famous Wiener Schnitzel, which, as the name spells out is from Vienna, Austria, so also it is liked in Germany it is by no means a German dish.
The Goulash isn't German either, it is Hungarian and the Dampfnudeln are a Bohemian dish.
So in Fact, there is no real German dish, only a lot of good food people like.
You can ask all the Germans who live around the world about there famous German dish and you will get surprising answers.
But there is one thing most Germans agree on and what they don't want to miss where ever they are, and this is the German bread. German bread is made in an enormous variety and it is the most delicious one I have ever eaten, and I traveled around a bit.

There is no national dish, there are too many regions here and they all have different specialities. Something common in all is the sausage of course, but it is not just one, there are tuns of them! The one that is sold most often on the street is "Bratwurst".

Kaiman
It depends on the region.

I'm from Schleswig-Holstein and we eat a lot of fish, like Hering, Bueckel, Aal, etc.

Weiner schnitzel and everything that ends in "wurst".

The national drink is obviously beer.

Do you mean after beer? : ) That must be wiener schnitzel.

I think the same, very difficault, question is "What is the national beer in Germany".
But my answer is - Ethnic food - What ever you want, you´ll found it.

Caroline Q
Like most countries, there is no one national food. Popular meals found in any German restaurant include: Wiener Schnitzel, Sauerkraut, Brezen (large, soft pretzels), Bratwurst & Nurnberger sausages, Haendl (roast chicken)and varieties of fish. Classic desserts include: Apfelstrudel and Kaiserschmaan. As everyone knows, Germans also tend to unite over beer (particulary Bavarian).

For me there's only one German national food:
KAESESPAETZLE!! *slurp*... he he

But seriously, I think Schnitzel and Sauerkraut is the most popular one that internationally known as German food.

luna
I think it is Sauerkraut with mashed potatoes and sausage. But I don't like it although I'm German;-)
I prefer a Pizza:o)
