What is with these packs of women in Germany walking with ski poles?

I have been living in Germany for about 3 years now and have noticed these constant "gangs" of about 5-15 middle aged women walking in groups using ski poles. It's not like they are walking in rough terrain or up hills... just wandering the streets of Hannover. What is the deal?? Are they worried that it might start snowing soon? I've seen these poles in stores too... they can cost a couple hundred Euro! Can some one enlighten me as to what's the deal with these poles???

I'm Bavarian (that is, South German, if you like), and I see that elderly pack quite often with their -- be careful, Denglish follows: "Nordic Walking Schticks".

I talked with the owner of a sports shop, and she explained me the difference. Hell, that's a lot of science! There are Nordic Walking Sticks for soft underground, for mountainy areas, and hell-knows-what, and you can change the soft part of them according to underground, and... -- well, I lost track then.

I'm not the youngest of persons, but I think two feet and hands and a rucksack will do.

It is called Nordic Walking, trains your upper body too.
I use those sticks for hiking in rough terrain

It is a good way to incorporate upper body exercise into your regular day to day. They can and are used everywhere.

It is called Nordic walking, the sticks are need to help balance when the cellulite starts shifting around in there butts as they walk throwing them off balance. It is far better than stranded lands whales laying on the grounds rgying for help. Hep me I can't get up.

ash
its called hiking for old ppl. they need ski poles to support their delicate legs.
